I know I can pay to move up to the front of the airplane and get 5" more leg room, which would be really nice.

BUT, is there ever a time that I can select Economy Plus seating? I know they upgrade their flyers with status to E+, but do those seats ever open up for the general public, such at the 24 hour check in window?

Also, what about exit row seating? I am flying solo this trip and wouldn't mind sitting in the exit row.

Flyers with status on United aren't really "upgraded" to E+. They can choose these seats as soon as they make a reservation.

These days, if you don't have status with United, or pay to move to E+, you aren't going to fly there. They do not ever open up for selection by non-status flyers who don't pay the fee. Every once in a while, someone will be moved up there who doesn't, but this is unusual.

I suggest that you pay the fee for E+ if you have no status. It's worth it on a flight over 2 hours.

You cannot pre-select exit row seats either; they are reserved for United flyers who are either 1K or Premier Executive status, or traveling with someone who is.

That's exactly how we got E+ last November. Checking in online we were offered ExPlus seating right in the front of the cabin at the bulkhead for $50 each. Otherwise we would not even be sitting together(long story:sad2:). For flights 4 hrs and more, it's worth it. I wouldn't bother for shorter ones.

The only time we got exit row seating was on one trip with UA that we didn't even have a seat on the plane for. Since we are Canadian, they won't offer us compensation or bump us because they won't pay for a connecting flight for us to use a "anywhere in the cont. US" voucher. A family in the exit row volunteered and we got their seats!

Your mileage may vary.:)

My only E+ experience is when we were booked in the last row of seats. The aircraft was changed with that row no longer existing..... they upgraded us at the gate to E+.

My flights are about 2 hours each with a connection in Denver...... so a total of 4 - 2 hour flights round trip. They are offering $39 per flight as the upgrade cost right now....

The only reason for me to move to E+ is so I can use my laptop easier...... normal coach I have to angle the laptop to use it.....

I am on all A319 and A320's this trip.
