Good Evening Everyone!

My question regards carryons with United. We usually fly Southwest and our carryons meet their standard. However United is a bit smaller. Do you think I could go by the airport before our trip to see if they are allowable? We are off by about an inch maybe two. I really do not want to have to keep buying new luggage to meet smaller and smaller standards.

Any advice you have would be greatly appreciated!!:goodvibes

I'm not sure I really understand your question.

It sounds like you know that your luggage is too big. Are you wanting to use a "sizer" at the airport? I don't believe that UA has "sizers" at most airports (the agents just measure the bags). From your post, it sounds as if you already know that your bags are too big - no one at the airport can "pre-authorise" your bag (if your bag is too big, it is too big). Whether or not you will get dinged for an over sized bag (i.e. forced to pay to check it) will depend on the agent at the time you check in).

Perhaps I am just not understanding your question.

The measurement I am unsure of includes the flexible handles which are quite large and cushioned. I just do not know if those are included in the criteria. I obviously do not fly often and I guess I really need to know how to measure my luggage accurately. Thank you for your input!

Thank You!!!:) I knew about the wheels and pockets but not the handles. I find it interesting that a piece of luggage is marked 22 inch but with the handles it is 23-24 inches. Oh well! I guess I get to go shopping! Thank you everyone!

Yup - never trust the size on the luggage label. They often discount the wheels/handles and/or the "swelling" when the luggage is stuffed full.

It took 3 days of searching their site regarding what constituted personal items and lo and behold, I found carryon dimensions that were further explained. To me, this would be important info to have on their baggage page. The "or" is very important regarding handles and wheels for a lot of travelers!

What are the dimensions for a personal item?

Carry-on bag dimensions should not be more than 9" x 14" x 22" (length + width + height) or 45 linear inches (the length, width and height added together) -- or 51 linear inches with handles and wheels. This corresponds to 22 x 35 x 55 centimeters.

YEA!!I do not have to go shopping now!!:cheer2:

I hope this helps others!!!

Thanks for the info. Just as a FYI, we just flew home on United this weekend and they do not charge for luggage on the return flight if you are using RAC at the Disney resorts. I knew they didn't earlier this year and checked while there and was told they still are not charging for luggage fees on United Airlines. So we paid $11 per bag on the way down and 0 on the way home. I don't like paying for luggage and is generally why we now fly Jetblue or Southwest, but we cashed in our United FF miles for this recent flight. So I don't think the current fee was too bad. Generally the fee is $15, but they were running a special and if you paid prior it was only $11.
