Ungyuns/Onions

Do you know anyone who pronounces the word "onion" with a "g" in it, so that it comes out "ungyun"? It doesn't irritate me, but it does make me laugh. We have a friend who does it, and my husband and I look at each other and give each other a knowing giggle look .

Never heard that - but my grandparents used to pronounce "sandwich" as "sangwich".

I say Ongion.

And as you are from Texas, I will ignore your giggle if you'll ignore my snort every time you drop your "g" on the end of a word or use "a" instead of using the "i" that should be used in words.

I think I do too... I just said it out loud so many times the word just sounds wrong now though! Lol

Not with a g, no.

However, I do know a fair number of (especially older) Cajuns who say on-YAWN; the stronger the accent, the more likely that the emphasis will end up on the second syllable.

I also have a brother in law (married to DH's sister)who literally uses the term "turn around" in every sentence.

I live in New England and do not pronounce a g in onion. DD used to say yunyun. When I was in high school in NC, onion was the only word I got wrong on a spelling test because for the life of me I could not understand what word Mrs. Browning was trying to say.

No. I'm always annoyed when people knowingly pronounce words wrong. My grandfather used to say.

My oldest daughter pronounced it that way when she was about 2 but quickly grew out of it.

I can't stand when someone uses "axe" for the word "ask". You ASK me a question. You don't AXE me a question.

No, but I do hate when people say WOODER instead of Water.

Try having to hear Brookynites & people from Queens say "Wahdah" for water and "Quaddah" for quarter.

My BFF back in college used to say "melk" for milk. That used to drive me nuts. There are only four letters in that word and an "e" is not one of them.


I noticed around Christmas time that Amazon had a new commercial for the Kindle. Only the announcer would call it the "KenDOLL." That would have been great for Mattel Toys. But, not Amazon and not for their number 1 selling product.

It bugged the crap out of me so much that I almost wrote an email to Amazon about it. Apparently a lot of other people did complain, as about 3 weeks later, the same commercial aired with the announcer then saying "Kəndle" with such a soft I, that it sounded like "KənDOLL."

I guess they worked on the guy's diction. Round three of a new commercial out now and the announcer is finally calling it a KINdle.

Same here. I thought maybe French (like New Orleans?) - oignon.

The one I hate is tinnis for tennis. Shannen Doherty says that - I think she's from somewhere in the south.

I can sympathize with overused phrases, I have an uncle who uses the term "I hauled off...." in every sentence.

In regards to the original question, I have never heard it pronounced it a G. Always pronounced it more lik unyins, as in don't put unyins on mine!

Hmmmm....when DD was a toddler she said "yumyums" for onions. DH and I occasonally say it like that as a joke.
