Unfortunate way to end our magical cruise

Which many times does not help since most safes have a default code ( I beleive that it all zeros ) that allows someone to access the safe. Those with ill intent generally find a way.

It's irritating to me that when paying customers have been truly been violated IN THEIR OWN ROOM that it's suggested that they haven't been diligent enough.

The last time we cruised on the Magic, the cabin's safe was locked from the previous owner. We called hotel services and the person who came to unlock the safe (and makes sure they hadn't left anything behind) had to put in a special code (and possibly a key too?) and then the safe had to call through ALL the possible combinations (up do 10,000 different combos) which took several minutes until it came to ours.

Point of the post is that it wouldn't be a quick in and out to steal something out of the safe even provided they had access the special code and possibly a key.

In our case it didn't have to go through all of that, maybe because it was locked open. How would it know though? The locking mechanism just makes the bolt slide back & forth.
It took him around 30 seconds.

I try to minimize the possibility of having valuables lost or stolen by leaving them home. I am not interested in lugging around my laptop, but I could see the appeal of bringing an iPad - if I had one. It's one thing for someone to steal something that's out in plain sight. However, for a crew member to go through your luggage that's under the bed is a VERY bold move!

Just wanted to add that I don't lock my luggage, but I bring cable ties. Guess I'll use them on the ship when everything is packed.

That is terrible luck to have that happen. When we went in feb on the dream we had a room host named Debi, he was a nice young man and our dd liked him.

It is so sad to read about your IPAD theft. It is obvious that the stateroom host has something to do with this. I mean .....going through your luggage that has been sitting under the bed ..... who could have done such a thing ?

I wonder what DCL would say about this.

Wow, driving home Now from the Fantasy and left our iPad and 3 iPhones laying around all week. No trouble at all!

Thank you for the reminder! I'm surprised, but shouldn't be, that something like this could happen on a DCL cruise after all the rave reviews you hear about most cm's. That is also a crazy story about the Disney Wonder/Nelson/iphone story! I hope Disney gets back to you soon.

I've always left iphones charging in hotel rooms... just assuming that it would be too obvious for housekeeping to steal and because I'm way too trusting. One time we checked with a hotel after a stay because we forgot my dd's winter boots in the closet and housekeeping returned them to us with an ipod and dock we didn't even realize we left behind. :thumbsup2

I will start being more careful with our electronics and also with our passports. :)

Don't think all all crooks are smart enough to wipe an iPad immediately. Google the ABC news report they just did on the TSA. Most of the agents were honest. But one agent swiped an iPad, which was tracked to his home using the iFind (?) feature two weeks later. The agent - still in uniform - lied to the reporter about having the iPad. The the reporter set off the iPad alarm while they were conversing at the agent's front door, and you could hear it go off in the house right behind him! Busted! So not all crooks are bright.

Love to hear when karma bites a thief in the bum!
I don't know if its been mentioned (sorry if so), but that alarm, with a warning that all data will be wiped from the device, can be sent even if the device is locked due to password protection. Love the alarm!
I hope that the OP gets some satisfaction. Best of luck.

Wow sorry. That stinks. This is why we don't put our bags out at night either. U never know. Glad they started letting u carry them off.

We sailed the Dream 9/30 to 10/4 and had a wonderful time! Loved Castaway Cay (even the downpour as we headed to the beach was amusing!), stayed on the ship in Nassau and rode the AquaDuck too many times to count, kids enjoyed the club and we had some adult time, food was good, service as good, character interactions were fabulous, shows and movies were fun as well...just a great, great time!

Now, I preface this by saying that I know I shouldn't have done this and unfortunately it was a hard lesson to learn. The last night we packed before dinner, including our carry ons. I took my IPad from the safe, packed it in my carry on and put the carry on under the bed, with the rest of our packed luggage. We went to dinner at 5:45 and returned the room at 7PM. DH stayed in the room all night as our youngest had fallen asleep in her appetizer at dinner :) The carry on never left our sight except for when it was under the bed while we were at dinner. Our stateroom attendant (and or his helpers) came in and made the couch bed and pull down bunk.

As we disembarked the ship I went to pull out the IPad - gone! As we further opened our luggage upon arriving to our next destination, it was clear that all our bags - carry ons and packed suitcases- had been rifled through. I know I should have been more careful and left the IPad in the safe until we walked off the ship - my bad! It is just disappointing that someone would steal it. As DH pointed out, our IPad was probably worth a month of food for the families of these workers. Still, disappointing and had to explain this (why someone would take something that wasn't theirs) to my 3 kids.

Now, we had travel insurance and they will cover this, but getting in touch with risk management at DCL has not been easy. Still waiting for a phone call after two voice messages left.

Just wanted to remind people to keep your belongings locked up and to learn from our mistake. We are staying positive and reminding ourselves that this was a small incident and should not dampened our spirits on what was a wonderful family vacation.

iPads have built in GPS. Have you looked for it? I had mine taken while at a hotel. I called my husband and he found it via the GPS tracker. He found it at a specific address. He called the hotel, told them the address and the hotel sent their security team to the address as it was an employee address. Otherwise I guess we would have had to call the police. Sorry your trip ended on a sour note.

Wow! We were on the same cruise.. So sorry that happened! We left our cell phones and a tablet out charging most days and didnt even think that that it would happen. Hope it is recovered quickly for you.

Sorry to hear about your missing items. When we cruise we always leave items in the safe. We also have found that we don't really tell our steward where we are going or when we will be back. And we leave the "Privacy Please " hanger on the door. Cast are not even supposed to knock when that is on the door so they cannot be sure if the room is empty.
FYI,NBC news reported that theft of Apple products was up 40% from the same time last year. Interesting piece of info.

We do this as much as possible too but have to leave it off so he can clean our room in morning & pull down bunk in evening.

I read an article where they call it 'Apple Picking.' :rolleyes2

Just wanted to post an update - Disney contacted the ship, housekeeping and security. Due to the fact that they didn't call me back until Tuesday afternoon, we all know that there was no chance of recovering the IPad. In fact, I am resigned to the fact that it was probably wiped clean before I even knew it was missing. They did say that because it was in our locked stateroom and we could narrow the time down to when we think it was stolen, they will have housekeeping question or stateroom attendant and look into who had access to the room during the time we were at dinner. Of course unless the IPad is found on the person, there is nothing they can do.

They were quick to let us know that we should file with our travel insurance. They sent us an immediate letter that we would need for the travel insurance claim. Hoping it all works out -

Just a warning--the TSA guys are ones to watch as well, and not just for tablet computers, sometimes for MUCH MORE IMPORTANT THINGS. Somebody stole my daughter's asthma inhaler out of our bag while we were going through TSA--that was the day I found out that inhalers have street value! Thankfully, my mother (who also has asthma) was traveling with us and had a spare, but DD started wheezing and THAT's when we found out the inhaler was taken.
