k so I just talked to someone who got fired from their job a couple weeks ago (good job, delivery job , teamsters union, you fill in the blanks) for serious attendance issues...and they said they don't have to worry about working for the next 2 years cause they will be able to collect unemployment....like no intention of even seriously trying to find a job. Is this where our country is at right now? State of Florida, thanks.

That attitude makes me so mad! I got laid off last July and I still haven't found a full time job. I'm actually looking at job websites right now and sadly, there aren't many jobs out there.

Unemployment is a pain in the behind and I can't wait until I am off of it. I stress over finding a job every day since I got laid off. I never would have imagined I would be out of work for this long. I apply to jobs and then I never hear anything back...it's very frustrating. The emotional stress that I'm under is terrible.

Please don't think that every person who is on unemployment doesn't want to work - I want a job, I want to work again. I just have to find a place that will give me the opportunity.

How much money do people receive when they're on unemployment? Is it a flat rate or a percentage of what they earned prior to losing their job?

no clue never been on it....anyone?

If he/she was fired he may have a hard time collecting unemployment. Hopefully the employer kept good records of his attendence issues and can deny the claim.

Pretty basic policy. You don't show up for work (without a good reason) you lose your job. They shouldn't be able to collect.

As an employeer I would fight that unemployment. I just had a lady quit because the job was "too hard" for her(retail sales). She just left a note and didnt come back. She had to get a job because her unemployment was up and I think she thought if she worked a few weeks and quit she could collect again. Well I fought it and got the letter in the mail today I won.

Depends on the state. Florida pays, at most, $275 a week.

That's what I thought. And if he was fired while in a union I am fairly certain the employer probably has very good records, because the union would have fought for his job if it was an "unjust" firing.

For the amount of unemployment I believe it is a percentage of what you were previously making.

Some people here in Quebec (Canada) live on unployement for years and sometimes, haven't even worked once in their lives =/ Not saying that some don'T eserve it, it's a great help.... for someone who is willing to find another job OR for those who really need it..... Not for someone who wants to sit, watch T.V at home and be paid for that (That's not a joke btw, I do hear that frequently from people on unployement) Even one of my relatives went to work in a province where unployement had better ammount of money for unployement, and came back to Quebec once they got it....

My little vent is done XD But just to say that i think that this problem is about everywhere that there is unployement aid offered =|

DH was laid off Oct 23rd. Becuase he was laid off and went back to school to get his degree in a field that is autherized by the "Furthering Vet Education program", he does NOT have to look for a job while he is in school and maintaining a certain grade point average.

This isn't to say that he hasn't looked, but it does make it easier for him to focus on schooling, then worring about making it to interviews and searching for somewhere to put in an application.

It's weird how his unemployed pay works. And don't ask me how they figure out what he is allowed to received each week as pay. Right now he is on his extention from having worked. His pay per week is $303.00 and after taking out state taxes, he gets $273.00. Once that runs out, in 6 weeks, he reverts back to his education pay, which is $390.00 per week, $351.00 after taxes.

The company I work for fired an employee last November. He gets $375 a week for unemployment and I have heard thru the grapevine he has no intention of finding another job until his unemployment runs out.

The employee was fired for not fulfilling his contracted work requirements (sorry can't go into more detail). Basically it was a clear cut case and the employee should have not qualified for unemployment. The company of course filed an appeal and we (the company, sorry I keep saying company we but I am involved in the process) lost the appeal. We then hired a lawyer and after meeting with the unemployment office and other lawyers involved with unemployment issues our lawyer advised us not to fight it anymore. Basically he said (off the record) currently the unemployment office is finding reasons to give anyone unemployment whether they "deserve" it or not.

Our company actually has proof that we should have won but the lawyer said it wouldn't matter. The proof is we fired an employee in 2008 for the exact same reason. He filed for unemployment, we appealed and we won so no unemployment for the 2008 employee but yet the 2009 employee qualifies. very frustrating.

Why does our company care so much about paying unemployment? I don't know about other states but in Missouri, the more claims a company has, the more unemployment taxes our company has to pay. The company pays unemployment taxes for each employee (not a flat rate, a rate determined by the state with various factors), taxes that the company will never see again even if no claims are filed against the company. But if claims are filed against the company, then the company has to pay even more taxes. Taxes that our small company will not be able to afford much longer if they get higher.

My cousin and his wife in NJ are barely looking. And he got fired yet collects after he crashed the delivery truck into a pole. He got fired the day he came back from disability. My aunt and uncle are beyond frustrated so we here a lot about this. He is a trained volunteer EMT but wont even try for anything medical. He wants "a computer job so he can sit and play all day", that is direct quote.

Good Luck with that! You don't get full pay on unemployment and it can be a pain. I don't even know if you could actually stay on it for a full 2 years.

My DH has been on it more times than I care for. He FINALLY got a full-time real job in July but it's a long drive to his new job but at least it's full time and with a real company vs. temp job. He had been on it since January and would take temp jobs here & there during that time. Everytime he has been laid off, he always gets glowing reference letters but the work just wasn't there.

It's not like unemployment just hands you the money on a silver platter & trust me if you do something unintentionally wrong, they want their money back! DH was on unemployment the first time from a temp. agency & he didn't realize he was supposed to call every Monday, so they denied his claim after they already paid us, so wanted their $800 back RIGHT NOW -- which of course, we had used to pay bills. Once that got straighted out it wasn't an issue but still not a bed of roses.

The last I heard, here in Indiana you can be on UE for 99 weeks. It breaks down to 26 from the state level and 73 from the federal level. And yes it burns me!

My sister was let go in December of 2008. I forget how much she was earning but she receives a bit over $400 on UE. She keeps saying she won't even look at jobs that pay less than $15 - 16 / hour. Why? She says that by the time she factors in the costs associated with employment (i.e., gas costs, health insurance premium for 2, new clothing, eating out for lunch, etc.) she would lose money by working.

The only job leads she has followed in the last few months are where a friend has called and mentioned an opening where he worked. She applied for it in Nov 2009, was offered it and turned it down based on the above criteria. Another spot opened at the same place in the spring of 2010 and she applied, was offered it and again, turned it down based on the same criteria.

In the meantime she has applied to every relief agency in the area (trustee for rent, utilities, insurance) and has received assistance. She even gets money from her church. When there was a delay in July on UE checks she applied for, and got approved for, food stamps. Two people in her house and she gets $367 a month. She "sells" her food stamps. Once she starts gettiing checks again she won't qualify for food stamps though

Having said all that, she joined a club with monthly dues and a weekly donation, eats at McD for lunch a couple times a week, shops everyday, wants me to go to FL with her for a vacation, went out to a sit down restaurant 3 times last week and once school starts up, rather than eating school lunch or eating at home, she'll pick her daughter up and take her to lunch everyday just like she did last year (Subway, Burger King, McD, Dairy Queen) and drive her to/ from school (4 trips a day) even though it's easily within walking distance.

Did I mention that she's been working for the last 3 weeks? Yep, it's a friend so she convinced him to pay her cash so she doesn't have to report the income and risk losing benefits.

Now my ex, he was let go in May of 2009. He was making $10/hr at his job and paid $75/week in child support. He was to the courthouse that same day filing for his support to be lowered. It's now at $55/wk. When asked by the judge how much his UE was he replied with $260/wk. I had proof that he was getting $290/wk and showed it to judge. ;)

$290/wk breaks down to 40 hrs/wk at a min. wage job in Indiana. The judge asked why he didn't take a min. wage and get off assistance. Same as my sister, once he figured in all the costs he was making more money by staying home. He's only applying for $10/hr jobs. She didn't like that and ordered him, very clearly, to get a job, any job. It's August now, more than a year later, and he just can't find a job.

She told him that if you start at the bottom, $7.50/hr, then you are at least in the door. You can work your up, probably get raises along the way, and benefits. He has no insurance so my DH covers DS.

Please note that I do have sympathy for folks that can't find anything. Maybe the area they live in has been hit especially hard or maybe they work in a specialized field like one would have via training (teacher, mechanic and the like) and jobs are sparse. But turning down jobs, refusing to take jobs that pay the same as on UE, using UE for vacation, selling food stamps ... :sad2:

As a general (and before people jump on with examples, I am saying general) rule if you are fired for disciplinary reasons there is a good chance you do not collect unemployment.

My company (major fortune 500 chemical company) does contest almost every unemployment claim for fired employees and 9/10 the employee does not collect or collects a greatly reduced benefit.

2ndly I would hate to see his standard of living if he thinks he can live well off of unemployment. A lot of times it averages out to a little over minimum wage here in Southern NJ.

I actually feel sorry for folks like this. No ambition to be any thing but minimum wage collectors usually leads to a life of struggle.

Don't know for sure but OP said it was a union job so some if not all of the benifits may be from the union and not state or federal.

Believe me I have taken unemployment before and certainly understand the need for the program but I know for a fact that the system is abused. In most instances however, the person is almost always better off getting a job because it pays more. I cannot even imagine why a person would rather collect it than work, but maybe that's just me. Not being political because I know that is no longer allowed but has anyone read about our next major crisis to the economy? Apparently it is the pension funds for state and federal workers who do not collect SS. Colorado has had a lawsuit filed against the state because they have capped the yearly increases at 2% when they were supposed to get 3.5%. One major whatchdog organization currently estimates the shortfall of these type of funds at almost 4 trillion dollars. The only way to continue funding them is increased taxes on those currently working or severly cutting state services. We are heading down a rocky path with the level of benifits that have been promised vs what can be delivered. I just increased my retirement savings because there is rough times coming.

Plenty of fired employees collect unemployment from our company. It's difficult here for an employer to win an unemployment dispute.

Anything dealing with people and money can be abused, nothing new or amazing.

I collected unemployment for a year and a half while sending out my resume to everything smoking and interviewing more than a starlet in a new movie. I finally got a job in my industry but it was a long haul and believe me, $345 a week (the highest you can get in my state) wasn't enough for a single parent to live off of, not even close.

Jobs are few and far between here and even if they fought like dogs to find one it will take a while to get. I was told for every job opening there were 245 resumes collected. Not good odds.

When I did get a job I took TWO friends OFF the unemployment roles. It was my purpose. UI is not fun or a hand out, and unless you have to feed mouths with it alone you don't realize how it's not something to brag about or to take advantage of.

It is a maximum $440 a week here in KY. Basically, you have to make at least $11 an hour full time to leave home-so very few look for jobs unless they pay significantly more than that.

Personally I think 99 weeks is too long and encourages people to not work(some, not all). You can get alot of schooling in (government paid if unemployed here) during 99 weeks. I have seen an influx of help wanted signs and ads lately too. My wife's employer has over 200 positions listed as open on the website now. You can get a job if you look, it may not be the best one, but it's a job. Unemployment has been around 7-8%.

I was unemployed in 2003 while living in Ohio, after looking for 6 weeks and finding no job leads, I expanded my search and had a job within 3 weeks in KY. Sometimes it is painful to make a change, but if I were unemployed again I would look at all options.
