Does anyone know the difference between these two positions in a broadway cast? We were reading the Playbill from Wicked earlier and my DS asked me this question and I don't know. :confused3

More recently, the term "understudy" has generally only been applied to performers who will cover a part, but still regularly perform in another role within the show; usually a minor, extra role. Performers who are only committed to covering a part and do not regularly appear in the show are often referred to as standbys. Standbys are normally required to sign-in and remain at the theater the same as other cast members, although sometimes they may call in, until they are released by the Production Stage Manager. If there is no doubt about the health of the actor being "covered," or there are no hazardous stunts to be performed, a standby may be released at the first intermission if not before. At times, standbys are required to stay within a certain area around the theatre (10 blocks in New York City is a common standard). The standby must also have a cell phone so that at any time they can be called to the theatre.

The understudy according to the web is usually a member of the cast who is already performing in the ensemble and would take a future performance if the lead is unable to perform however the standby is usually not a member of the cast but is someone is is ready backstage to take over a role immediately if the actor gets injured or sick while performing.....In other words the understudy is used in planned absences and the standby would be used in emergency or immediate situations....HTH

On that note, what's a "swing"? Some of the Broadway performers have "swing" in their role description.:confused3 I know it has nothing to do with being on a swing, by the way!

I think it means that they are prepared to cover many/almost every role...

When I was on Bway a "swing" was a well trained singer who could replace any member of the chorus.

Funny story: I had an understudy back in college for a part I had in a play who practiced my ways, my movement and everything like a CLONE...? She ended up marrying my ex boyfriend, too!! :lmao:

You were on Broadway? Way cool! What did you do? The closest I ever got to Broadway was walking down the street. LOL
