Under the bed...

We've gone on the cruise twice now and both times we stored our borrowed suitcases under the bed. Well, now we splurged and bought our own but are not sure if they will fit under the bed. They are suitcases that require about 8 inches of space when opened. If anyone has any idea we would appreciate the input...Thanks. :confused3

I know that our extra large suitcase that we store the big ones in when empty fit under the bed. We couldn't slide them but a DISer posted that if you lift up the frame, you can easily fit it under the bed. :) It was a little difficult in our cat 10 this last time next to the wall. Much easier when we were in an 8 and the bed was in the middle of the room, though we liked the 10 floor plan better.

We put our suitcases under the bed and one in the closet so when we took our clothes off, we could put them in the dirty clothes suitcase. After the first one got filled, we put that under the bed and a new one in the closet to start filling. It will save you time at the end and all the dirty clothes are in the same suitcases.

We bought new luggage before our cruise, and they are the American Tourister brand. It's the expandable kind, but I'm not sure the exact measurements, however we were able to fit all of our luggage under our bed, and I'm really glad of that!!

Okay, we are feeling better about our suitcase purchase and that is a good idea about the dirty clothes. Thanks for your responses.....! :wave2:

The other things that can go under the bed are the life jackets. Put them under the bed after the safety drill and you can put suitcases (and other stuff) up on the upper shelf.

We have very large suitcases and they did fit under the bed opened up. I could not fit them under the bed closed (by about an inch), but had no problems nesting our luggage and keeping the largests open.

I fit 3 LARGE suitcases under our cat. 6 bed on our last sailing....and yes, all the frames are is PVC like tubing......very light but very strong.....the whole thing just lifts up.........

Our 6 pieces of luggage nest inside each other, in the end leaving 2 very large pieces. After the muster drill, I lifted the light frame of the bed and SHOVED them under, but they were so high that the corner of the bed didn't go back down flat. I just left it because we wanted to explore the ship :)

When we returned to our cabin later, our cabin steward had fixed them under there for us :) I guess he knew exactly how to position them to get them to lay flatter or something. We tried to fit them in the closet but there was no way they fit in there at all.

I fit a lot of suitcases under the bed. They were all soft though. I think hardcase ones might be difficult if they are thick.

I have 2 large Delsey hardsided cases, and while I did have to life the bed frame to slide them under, they fit just fine under the mattress within the perimeter of the bed frame.
My wife and I bought these when we started cruising 22 years ago. We always secure them with a luggage strap. Everytime I see a softsided suitcase with a ripped side, or ripped out zipper on the baggage belt at the airport, I'm glad we went with the hardsided case. I guess they are very out of fashion now, we tryed to buy one last year and very few luggage shops carry them. Normally we'd just borrow one from grandma but SHE was off on a cruise of her own.

I'm thinking of leaving one empty suitcase right in the middle of the floor so my three year old can sleep in it. Seems we're short one bed in the cabin! :teeth:

Babsnabbs, too funny about your 3 year old. I think my kids would have actually enjoyed doing that just because it was different, when they were that age. My DH and I got a good laugh with that.
TVguy, thanks for the tips. We looked all over for those hardsided ones just to put them under the bed. We had no idea you could lift the bed. And "Grandma" is where we used to borrow our suitcases from too. It was time to branch out on our own!
Thanks for all your responses. If the suitcase won't go under I will remember about the life vests, thanks.

I never fail to learn stuff. Cruised twice, and I never knew you could lift the bed up. We pack kinda light, so we usually just shove them in the closet. No more though. Thanks.

Man, I love this place.

If you look closely you will see that the bed (at least in our cat. 6's) are 2 twins slid together.....

Hard sided luggage may seem to be more durable but ... On one of our DCL cruises our hard sided samsonite got shattered sometime between the time we left it out in the hallway and the time arrived home. Don't know if it was DCL or the airline that busted it up
