A 44-year-old Maryland woman faces charges of child abuse after police say she gave birth in a portable toilet and dropped the newborn into the waste tank.

A Maryland woman is charged with child abuse after police say she dropped her newborn into a portable toilet.

After exiting the portable toilet in Long Wharf Park in Cambridge, Candy Vigneri got a cigarette from a construction worker and sat at a picnic table, police Lt. Wayne Bromwell said.

As she sat, a male passer-by approached the toilet but Vigneri warned him, "Don't go in there, I just had a baby there," police said.

The man immediately called 911. Vigneri returned to the toilet and retrieved the newborn from the foul liquid at the base of the tank.

The baby was unresponsive and covered with a blue antibacterial chemical agent when emergency responders reached the scene, police said.

Vigneri told officers that she didn't know she was pregnant.

She was arrested Wednesday on charges of child abuse and reckless endangerment and is being held on a $50,000 bond.

The baby is in stable condition at Easton Memorial Hospital. Dorchester County social services will take control of the newborn after she is released from the hospital.

The "I just had a baby in there" part is what disturbs me most.

This woman's actions appear to be those of someone who is very mentally disturbed. It seems to show a real diconnect with reality.
If the child survives this might be for the best, I fear for a child that is raised by someone with issues that severe.

As someone who would love a child and can't get pregnant, stories like this make me SICK. I would be just as mad regardless of fertility issues, but it's hard to remain calm when there are morons with a womb out there having babies they don't want.

She knew she had the baby and that it dropped into the toilet, and that it was wrong because she told someone not to go in there, then she went in and retrieved the baby before the paramedics so she could say she did! Sounds to me like she was having the cigarette waiting for the baby to die and the guy who came along messed up her plan That's not mentally ill that's evil IMO. Poor baby

at first I was thinking how shocking it might be to all of a sudden have a baby when you did not know.

But then I thought, aren't there some signs that you are pregnant. even if you don't really notice the weight gain. What about missing "the visit" for about 8 or 9 months?

I am so sure this woman is very disturbed. I hope that sweet baby is ok after being in those chemicals....AND not to mention whatever else was in there besides the chemicals...... How awful.
