Unauthorized Credit Card Charge?

My DH once upon a time belonged to "FreeCreditReport.com", but called and cancelled his account on 12/16/09.

The appeared again on his January statement, with a billing date of 1/13/10, clearly AFTER he cancelled his account.

Capital One will credit the amount no problem, but we don't want to keep doing that. We have been wanting to cancel that particular Capital One card for a while, but we can't if "FreeCreditReport.com" keeps charging the account.

My DH will call them once again today. What they are now committing is fraud.

Does anyone have any ideas on what he can say to get them to REALLY cancel the account?

I've heard of other people having problems cancelling this service. They had to call several times just to check it was cancelled during the billing cycle to make sure it was gone.

Also, can you tell Capital One in advance that any charges from this company are not approved?

Cancel the card like you want to.
If anyone tries to charge the account, they'll receive an "Account Closed" & it won't go through.

Problem solved.

you may be out of luck. It wouldn't surprise me if there was something in the fine print that read that you are still able to be charged if you cancel after a certain time. For instance, if you had cancelled BEFORE 12/13, you might not be responsible for the whole month between then and 1/13, know what i mean?

however...i could be making this up. ;) Good luck though!

Yes, I thought many of those companies had written in there a 30-day window to allow for billing to end.

I had a problemw ith freecreditreport.com, too. I ended up having to threaten to turn them in to our state consumer protection agency before they credited me and cancelled the service without a problem.

Of course cancelling the card would work, too.

When visiting my parents last weekend they were having a similar problem and eventually got the issue resolved via lots of yelling at freecreditreport though the phone. Seems like a shady company, but I can't stop singing their stupid commercial songs.

Yes, this companies is one of the biggest scammers out there, because they are NOT a "free" company. I'm surprised they don't have a class action lawsuit against them yet.

Notice how many times those Freecrditreport.com commercials air, and how many versions there are of them? Those actors get residuals each time every one of them airs. The money has to come from somewhere. :rolleyes1 Considering how many times they air, Freecreditreport.com must be swindling a lot of people. :sad2:

Thanks all!

DH took care of it (or so we hope...)

Apparently there is a fedural regulation (Regulation Z of the Fair Credit Reporting Act and the Truth in Lending Act). I don't know what exactly it means, but the SECOND DH mentioned it, things got done! :rotfl:

DH threatened a police report, a letter to the attorney general, the BBB, and legal action, along with that regulation to FREECREDITREPORT, was put on hold a while, and then told it WAS cancelled. Karen told us (just putting that out there in case we forget and need to refer back!)

Capital One credited DH 3 months of charges and put a stop on any charges from them for 15 months. Nice.

Hopefully that will be the end of it.

And, FWIW, do NOT JOIN FREECREDITREPORT!!! :thumbsup2

This is just one of many reasons I never, ever sign up for anything that you can "cancel at anytime" - or "cancel if you're not statisfied" with such and such.. I've heard far too many horror stories from friends and family about charges that went on forever and ever before they actually got these places to STOP billing/charging them.. To me there is NOTHING out there worth signing up for with the "promise" of being able to "cancel" at a later date..:headache:

So glad your situation worked out well though..:goodvibes

:thumbsup2 Thanks! Me too.

My DH has a tendancy to do things like this. We are working on his not signing up for every little thing that sounds good at the moment.

Oooo! Can I borrow your DH the next time I have to call up Customer Service & lay into them? :yay:

Good for you. :woohoo:

You might want to check into getting a Citibank "virtual" credit card. Over on the FatWallet.com forum, many of them use this credit card. supposedly, every time you use the card online, you are give a "one time use" virtual card number. It's only good for one time AND you get to set the amount the card can be charged for - and that's it. It can't be used a second time.

So if someone tries to charge again with that number or a greater amount, and the charge won't be approved. It's great for websites people may not be sure of. And you don't have to worry about your card number being passed around online or being hackers getting your card number. :)
