Unaccounted costs incurred?

Just wondering if there are unaccounted costs that you incurred during your trip that were not on your original budget? I want to have some kind of cushion for this....but I rather foresee what that might be....and how to plan for mistakes, mishaps, and extra magic. Any advice would be great appreciated!

I got bronchitius mid trip and had to be pushed around in a wheelchair becuause I was having a hard time breathing (forgot my breathing treatmnets at home for asthma) - that was an expense I wasn't counting on - though I was able to get a cheaper rate by purchasing days in advance

Oh I'm so sorry that happened. I do have minor asthma and didn't think about that.

The things that I think some people don't account for while planning a trip are expenses that you may have *before* you leave. Such as having to buy new clothing or a new suitcase. Do you buy a lot of 'travel' size items to take with you or extra toiletries? Do you need to pay someone to watch your pets or your house? Not everyone will have a lot of things like that, but it's always a good idea to just step back and think about it. For during the trip, just be sure you calculate in tips and taxes on purchases.

DS got an ear infection LAST year and pink eye THIS year, so each trip to the urgent care center with Rxs was about $200. Something I can tell you I never planned for. At least this year, I knew who to call immediately and got him in and out as to not mess up our MK day!!

I've had a lot of them, these are not from 1 or 2 trips.. this is a lifetime of things I didn't plan for and costed money....

0: didn't know gratuity wasn't included in meal plan and wow that's a lot of money for tips on top of the meal plan cost..
1: completely underestimated how dehydrated we might be when back in our room for the night and we were tired of just water and got sports drinks to help hydrate faster. We were cramping and not doing well.
2: forgot to pack stuff to handle blisters and needed to buy things.
3: a very rainy trip we needed to do laundry 2 extra times (soap + laundry expense)
4: same rainy trip, a pair of sneakers so wet that even after dried smelled horrible and needed to be replaced.
5: ponchos we brought from a dollar store didn't survive and we had to get more while there.
6: we enjoyed MNSSHP so much we baught a second ticket.
7: daughter dove out of the way twisting her ankle instead of being run over by kids pushing a wheelchair and needed a wheelchair or ecv the next couple days to help stay off her feet and recover without sitting around doing nothing.
8: finally got tickets to kttk tour when someone canceled.
9: decided to take a taxi to an early morning tour instead of disney transportation.
10: starbucks and joffrey's coffee in the park.
11: ran into something perfect for a holiday present for a family member.
12: decided to check out universal one day.
13: decided to see la nouba to have somewhere without rain on a very raining trip.
14: went a little crazy trying out snacks we've never had
15: starting a popcorn container collection (and there are a lot of them, and they may or may not be different every trip).
16: got tired of the similar food we kept finding and splurged for a nicer meal just to have something different to eat 1 meal
17: there will be something for sale that will call out your name and you'll never use again. (my daughters is some limited release mickey ears)
18: something you had no clue was at disney and someone else you randomly talked to recommended you do it.
19: something special that you consider do not miss started after you thought you were done planning and found out about while there.
20: disney changed prices on you mid trip (parking, cost of food, drinks, merch, etc).
21: we really enjoyed disney quest
22: penny machines.
23: massage chairs (my favorite ride)
24: spent and saved money at the same time by using garden grocers after we arrived so we ordered thigns for breakfast and bottle beverages.
25: my daughter suddenly got sick as we left the park and was not able to travel as we were leaving the park to head to the airport. I had to scramble for a room, change travel plans, medical supplies, visiting a doctor, transportation that was more direct and faster, food, etc for those days. Some of it I was able to get back on travel insurance because I had the paperwork from a doctor that she shouldn't travel..
26: stuck at disney because of weather and canceled flights (I know, it's horrible being in florida extra time while back home it's a blizzard :)).
27: broken phone charger cables needed to be replaced.
28: loved H2O and got better quality versions while at a value :)
29: didn't expect the weather to be good enough for pool and needed to get clothing for that.
30: wasn't expecting the night to be so cold and decided to buy sweatshirts instead of calling it early (was a party we paid for, wasn't going to miss it because we planned bad).
31: the snow storm of 2010, wow we needed stuff.
32: stuff we just bought in the moment we had no use for.
33: completely missed an ADR and got the fees.
34: 6+ people eating at a table service is an automatic 18% gratuity no matter how horrible they served you.
35: hadn't traveled in awhile and forgot about tipping maid service, bell hops, etc..
36: the arcade was really fun... :)
37: the games in the dino section of AK.
38: buying stuff at the resort because I was too tired to get my drink cup from the room and come back to fill it up instead.
39: buying stuff at the resort because we didnt' have time to get our drink cups before they closed..
40: really thirsty and using the vending machines at bus stop or resort.
41: finding out the flower and garden preview buffet style lunch event was happening while we were there and getting tickets for it.
42: needed another bag and baggage fees to get things home.. (we packed tight and forgot about room for anything we got home)
43: Giving my daughter some freedom and some extra spending money to do a park on her own.

You didn't ask this but things i've learned about to help offset costs that I think people overspend on prior to arriving:

1: basic medication is available free from first aid. (headache, ibuprofin, allergy, band aids). Basically anything needed to keep you from leaving and not spending more money was free.
2: a cup of ice water is free from all counter services.
3: some candy shops, especially in springs has free samples to try.
4: on longer trips we like to have several unplanned days. We don't purchase park tickets for those days (or book fastpasses). if we decide we want a park, we add the tickets on for whoever is going into the park. Saves money overall. We are ok without fastpasses but take what we can find.. (it's really easy to get some btw).
5: don't purchase park hoppers or water parks and more until you actually need it while at WDW. It's the same price to add it on while there, not everyone your travel with needs to have it and if you decide it's not worth the cost you just saved a lot of money. You can't get a refund for unused park hoppers or water parks.
6: finding out disney's over priced cigarettes are actually cheaper than nyc prices.
7: goes with #33 above: call them up the next day and they will waive the no show fees in most cases.
8: give some magic. if you have extra meal plan credits you can't use, near the end of your trip surprise a family and ask them to join you for a table service. You overhear families talking and you'll find a family that is spending their life savings just to be there and no possible way they can do more than bring their own food.

We didn't experience this one but we met an amazing family that did.. They got food poisoning and severely dehydrated. Spent 24 hours in the hospital. It was week 2 of a 5 week trip and they were from canada. They couldn't afford the health care and had to go home early for treatment. If they had travel insurance they would have had coverage for illness and stayed...

AND THE ULTIMATE EXTRA UNPLANNED COST:

We enjoyed our fall trip so much, that we came back for 9 days 2 months later for xmas....

Your signature doesn't say how old your kids are, but budget a little extra (maybe $20 each) for just-in-case. I know we bought an extra shirt at least once because of a food mishap. And sometimes while on vacation, I've had to search out a drugstore to get some Benadryl or Advil because I rarely travel with it (we just don't take medication regularly in our family). Once I was there as a teenager with my church group and twisted my ankle and bought an Ace bandage at MouseGear. Sometimes my husband will take the kids to the arcade at the resort and spend $20 on tokens for them while I'm resting in the room. There are always things that come up!

- parking at home airport
- service costs due to your absence, like hiring someone to cut your lawn or take care of your dog
- clothes bought for trip (we tend to own fewer items than we'd like for a week long trip to FL heat...someone always needs something...usually several somethings)

Been down the ear infection drill on a Disney trip, but the co-pay was only $10.

One cost that got me was when a flight home got canceled. United offered a full refund, or passage on a flight the next day, food vouchers and hotel. We HAD to be home, and the only other flights home were on Southwest, which, at least at the time, had no agreement to accept other airlines tickets, so we had to book at the last minute fare on Southwest. They took the check from United, but their last minute fare was $100 a person more, so that was a $400 unexpected cost for the 4 of us.

YOU ARE AWESOME!!! I'm sorry you've had quite a few unexpected mishaps and misfortuntes....but it sounds like you have a great attitude to rise above it.

It was a lifetime of trips to disney.. The sound advice is your going to forget something, something is going to cause you to want to spend more money in the moment, someone may get sick (hopefully not requiring a change in when you leave) and bad weather sometimes needs the credit card to come out in order to save the vacation.

I like to have about $90 per day in florida (not day in the park) in my budget for unexpected, spontaneous changes and just caught in the moment stupidness.... It's better to come home with some of it left than trying to figure out where it's going to come from.

One of the other things that often gets me - many of the Disney stores have a "deal" going so that if you spend say $40 or $50 on merchandise, you can buy some other item (a tote bag or a blanket or a duffle bag or some other item) at a discount. I seem to be the perfect sucker for these "extras" and always seem to end up buying them.

7 yrs ago was our last vacation, and we went to the World. We ended up getting the swine flu. And unbeknownst to me, I was preggers with my 2nd child. I honestly was an emotional wreck and felt like I was dying....so I totally get it.

One trip we missed packing my daughter's toiletry bag. After getting directions (from the front desk at Paradise Pier Hotel) that we could purchase toothbrush and toothpaste in the gift shop (around $10) we get into our room to find that toothbrush and toothpaste were part of their toiletries in the room. Lesson learned there...

One trip I miscounted my daughters clothing and had to buy a couple of outfits. Oh, darn for her!

One trip we got there and discovered she had no underwear packed. So, off to the gift shops we went...

Hmmm... I think I have packing issues.

Some things we've needed over the years are things most others have covered but last year I was having big issues with the food at Disney (I think it was just to rich for me, I'm not used to eating such heavy meals) and after several of our table service meals I was so sick and vomitting, I didn't want to take Disney transportation and wanted to get where I was going quickly so we ended up using taxi cabs several times. So for our next trip I'm putting aside money for taxi's.

Also I think everyone probably puts aside money for snacks, even if your on the dining plan if your family is anything like mine they love to snack (rather snack on small things here and there all day instead of eating big meals) so we always put aside a good bit of money for those small snacks that we always tend to grab.

Also of course plan to have money set aside for medical things, whether that's a trip to the ER or Urgent care or medications and supplies at a pharmacy.

Whenever I vacation in general I like to budget at least a couple hundred dollars for unexpected things..not always bad things but just unexpected. Maybe I REALLY REALLY wanted that 1 gift but it was an expensive one or I needed to buy things like allergy medicine (though right now I just take walmart brand claritin so it's not near as expensive as other ones are), anti-acids, pain killers like advil, or heaven forbid a hotel room if flights didn't work out as planned.

I do a little happy dance when I get back if I didn't need all or any of my fund for unexpected things :)

Some examples of unexpected expenses on vacations in general:
1) *Attempted* to save $150 total when flying home one year from Boston..dropped rental car off at Boston airport took a shuttle to New Hamshire airport to catch a flight to Newark, NJ..storm in NJ shut down the airport (though we did get in just about 6 hrs later than planned) and had to spend money on a hotel room for a night since all the flights were full that next day from all the bumped flights. We still did end up saving $60ish in the end but we hadn't budgeted on spending extra after calculating our $150 savings and thus it became an unexpected expense

2) Ran out of tums on multiple trips..you'd think I'd learn to just pack a brand new unused bottle..

3) Contact solution and contact case forgotten on trip to MN a few years ago.

4) Just last month went to MD to visit my husband while he is working up there. We went to Baltimore Inner Harbor and walked to Little Italy, didn't realize the restaurant we picked for lunch only served a special menu (uhhhh not advertised whatsoever btw) on Sundays. We spent about $45 more than we had planned (that included tax and tip) because everything was so much more expensive than we had read online and outside on their wall of their place.

Oh as a general statement paying for parking when you're on vacation. Recent example parking in D.C. (I hadn't been there in 15 years)=cost to park was $18 for the day but that wasn't as expensive as it could get, $25 per day in Baltimore (though we parked 5 blocks further for $5 per day), Smithsonian museum in VA (40 mins west of center of D.C.) was $15 to park though admission was free, etc.

Now with WDW it's currently $20 per day (base amount for a normal car) for the parks unless you are a resort guest as that would be included (again for base amount for normal car) but just be sure to include other places you would be interested in when thinking about paid parking cuz parking can easily add up.

Just my opinion but when you at least budget a decent amount (which I call a couple hundred plus access to more funds if needed) it can make those unexpected expenses just a wee bit less stressful.

I have to say though I've been lucky [knock on wood] that I haven't had a medical emergency while on vacation.

Some of my examples may not cost a whole lot but it can all add up over a vacation if you snowball on those unexpected expenses.
