Hi -

My friends 9 and 11 year old sons are going to fly from PHL to SanFrancisco to visit their grandparents this summer on Southwest - what should we be sure to tell them, pack for them, send with them etc to keep them entertained and safe??

Thanks!!:thumbsup2

Have they booked the flights yet? If not, I would advise looking at other airlines besides SW for this particular trip. Personally, I'd be much more comfortable with non-stop flight for unaccompanied minors - especially going cross country. SW makes at least 1 stop going Philly to SF and all it takes is a summer thunderstorm to close down an airport or significantly delay the 2nd leg of the flight. BTW, I've been pricing Dulles to SF for this summer and am finding United to be significantly cheaper than Jet Blue or SW right now (YMMV however).

For your original question, I'd make sure they had books, non-electronic games, etc - something in addition to electronic games that could run out of battery juice (and extra batteries if appropriate). Also snacks and an empty water bottle to fill up after you get thru security.... wouldn't rely completely on the food/beverage service of the airline. I would also look at them having a cell phone - just in case. A simple pay as you would be fine for this.

Not all SW flights that have a "stop" schedule actually involve changing plans. Alot of times its just a quick 1/2hour stop to pick up passengers and those flying to SF never get off.

Different snacks are always good, pack a lunch (they dont serve sandwiches), without drink they will have to purchase those onces they get past security. books, small to med size "lego" kits (picture the size of the fold down trays). of course hand held electronic games. Cards are great. One new activity for each hour of flight.

Of course your'll have to make sure "grandma" does the same when she sends them home.

As PlutoPony noted it is not the change of planes that is the problem. It is the weather and potential delays. The second leg could still be delayed or canceled. I don't think anyone would want their children spending the night alone (albeit in WN's custody) in some random airport hotel.

I think booking for a non-stop flight is definitely the way to go. PHL is a hub for US Airways and there are PLENTY of nonstop flights available.
