Ok...I am in total disbelief!! The kids go back to school next Monday...they have been fighting quite a bit lately...because they are just as ready to go back as I am for them to go back! Well........just found out that my DS (7)'s school is on fire!!!!!!!!!!!!! :scared1: First of all, this is only to be it's 4th school year....brand new $17 million school....on fire!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! REALLY???? Sorry....just needed to vent! Now the scramble to figure out where they shuffle 900 kids that attend that school! We have 2 other elementary schools, but they don't have that kind of room!

Wow, that is surprising it is burning. Did it have a sprinkler system? I hope it doesn't create too much of an upheaval to the kids and teachers.

Yeah...sprinkler system...everything is so new...just opened in the 2008-2009 school year. Terrible! We don't know many details yet. I'll see if I can post a picture from the local paper's website.

Here's the picture (if this works)...

They say the two floors are damaged and part of the roof. That won't even include smoke and water damage to other areas. I'm kind of nervous...not sure what this will mean for the school year for my little guy. He is in his comfort zone there...he's upset about possibly going somewhere else even temporarily. And, our taxes...ugh!!!

Sorry for you and your kids having to be dealing with this. You shouldn't worry about the taxes, the city should have insurance for the rebuilding. :goodvibes

In my hometown, they were getting ready to open a 4th middle school. It had a fire only a few weeks before it was scheduled to open for its first year. Actually, that town has had 3 significant school fires. One was in the early 20th century, the middle school in 1993, and another middle school 2 years ago.

I am hoping it doesn't effect us...since we are still paying for it now anyway. The biggest thing is that there was no one in the school when it happened so no injuries! Thank goodness! Your hometown certainly had some bad fire luck! They put out an announcement that they should have a plan in place tomorrow and announce it as to what the kids will be doing. As of now, they have the fire contained to one 3rd grade classroom and the roof. So, quite a bit of it is out. That's a start. But, there's a lot of damage. I just hope they can get things fixed quick and get the kids back to where they belong.

I'm so sorry to hear about this.... I wonder if checking on A/C units or someone was working on something in order to get ready for school... :( I know we have had issues with A/C units this year... lots of our county schools have...

I hope if there are any changes, they are temporary and your little guy is okay with the temporary change... I know once they get their comfort zones they really hate to change that up..

Insurance should be held by the schools, I would think.. I'm sure it's required... We just built a new MS a few years ago...and our taxes went up but not by much..our school district is great about budgeting and pre-planning and looking for grants!!!

Still no official word on what will happen with the kids...but, they "think" it was lightning because we had one heck of a storm last night. And, the roof is where it started. That would explain also how it could really get going and not be put out with the sprinklers. The sprinklers did in fact go off, but couldn't get to the roof obviously. So, it's just a shame. The reports are actually saying that the water and smoke damage is actually worse than the fire damage. The fire was fortuantely contained to only the third grade wing. So, not terrible. But, the water and smoke damage is appearantly throughout. We will see what happens later. I had to drive my older son to the HS this am for wrestling practice and couldn't see anything from there. (The HS, JH, Intermediate and one of the elementary schools are all on one campus.)

Good luck to your town with this. I can't imagine having to deal with this but I remember being in Miami after Hurricane Andrew hit the day before school was scheduled to start. I don't know about elelmentary schools but 3 high schools were not usuable for the first half of the year and they did double sessions with the nearest schools to each of them. The first school went for 6am till noon and the 2nd from noon till 6pm. Anyone who wanted to eat lunches at school ate before or after school depending on their session. The teachers split a classroom with someone teaching the same subjects. Not ideal but it did keep the kids with the teachers they knew.

That is so awful, hope they can figure out a good plan so the kids aren't too dispersed around your district.
Thankfully no one was hurt and it wasn't arson, that's would be another worry on everyone's shoulders.

Oh Erin that stinks! Hope they get a plan in place soon & the clean up doesn't take too long.

Wow, glad everyone is safe! The school that I went to KG-2nd grade caught fire after I left and I was devistated. Hugs to your little guy! I hope the new routine is not too much of a scramble. :goodvibes

Oh no Erin! I'm so sorry. I bet it's going to be quite a frantic time for school administrators, bussing staff etc. I feel bad for all those teachers who lost their classroom items (probably alot personal too). No doubt they've been in their rooms recently making everything perfect for the students. At least it happened when no one was there...still that really stinks! Please keep us updated.

Erin that is awful. Hopefully you will hear soon about placement for your DS. Insurance should cover the damages to the school but it will take some time to fix. Thank goodness no one was harmed.

Thanks for all the well wishes everyone! We got notice today from the school that they are going to try to open next week...on time. They pumped water out today and have a professional cleaning crew on their way for tomorrow. After they are done, they will have air quality people come in and inspect the building. Fingers crossed everything goes well and we can go along as planned.

that's great news! hope they can get it all cleaned up and safe!

Hoping so!! On a happier note, Lisa...look how close our Mickey ghosts are getting to the end!!!

I know, it is getting close! and the funny thing I haven't had to do much planning this trip, with no ADR's we are just going to wing it! seems a bit strange doing it this way for me :rotfl2: are you getting stuff planned out? still can't believe we are missing each other by 5 days!

hey did you get to the PO today with the baby pages? no worries if you didn't, hope you can get them mailed by the end of the week though so I can get things together!
