I've usually taken a poncho for protection from the rain when spending the day in one of the theme parks, but am reconsidering due to the inconvenience of carrying a wet poncho in my small hobo bag. Are there any park restrictions for using a small umbrella?

No park restricttions, but considering how busy the parks are, be VERY careful. I once put my small umbrella up, and almost took out the eye of a nearby guest. I felt so bad!

No official restrictions against umbrellas in the parks. But as a practical matter they have a couple of issues:
  1. They don't play well in crowds as the ends tend to be right at eye level for other guests.
  2. They don't really help in the typical afternoon thunderstorm as they are accompanied by winds that will either break the umbrella or render it useless for anything below your shoulders.

I always have an umbrella (super tiny) & disposable ponchos. The umbrella is used rain & shine. The ponchos I throw away after one use, not back in bag. I also have a carabineer clip on my bag so the wet umbrella doesn't have to go back in either. I also put my arm straight up in the air when crowds get tight around me. I consider the umbrella 'required' theme park gear.

These are my concerns as well, OKW Lover.

I always use a very small umbrella and try to be careful with it.

I am hyper aware of my surroundings and careful to not hit/poke or be a nuisance with it.

Like all people at WDW, some people are not careful with them and some are. Some pay attention and others stop right in the middle of a pathway with no warning.

I always use an umbrella in the parks - having water falling on my head is something I hate! I'm very conscious of where my umbrella is and how many people are around me. I also only have two - one is BRIGHT orange and the other is BRIGHT blue and covered in Little Mermaid characters and are hard to miss for the people around me. I generally have the spines sitting directly against my head leaving the ends much lower than eye height for most people and am very cautious when moving with it.

I used an umbrella last week in Disneyland California as a sunshade. I'm very used to managing an umbrella in crowds, as I use one all year round for rain in my country. Like everything if you are not used to it, you might find it cumbersome and hit people unintentionally. I had a small handbag sized one which has a wrist strap. It's just a regular inexpensive kind, sold in department stores in my country.
