I'm flying in to MCO on Saturday on Southwest. I pretty much understand the policies for baggage, but I want to double check before I cause a mess at the security check point!

I've got my two checked bags, and I have a backpack (on the smaller side) and my purse. I was going to bring my umbrella in one of my checked bags, but I made a mistake and it's an inch and a half too long for my bag. :headache: The southwest website says this:
The following items are not considered carryon bags or personal-type items and are not counted against the "one-bag plus one personal-type item" limit:

A child restraint device for a ticketed child with a reserved seat or when complimentary, available space exists.
Assistive/mobility devices for individuals with a disability. There is no limit to the number of assistive/mobility devices a Customer can bring onboard the aircraft.
Outer garments or other wearable articles of clothing.
Food for consumption during flight contained in disposable packaging.
Walking canes or umbrellas.

Will I be fine to bring it? Is it an unsaid rule NOT to bring it? I don't travel often, and I really don't want to cause a big problem with it. I just want someone to read it and confirm that yes, I can bring it. :confused3

How expensive is this umbrella. I would just stuff it in there with the end poking out and if they give you a hard time them kiss it goodbye. That's what we did when we flew our of DTW but we ended up not having a problem. We flew with Delta.

Ha, honestly, it was like $15 on clearance from Target. It's just that this is a one way trip, and I've heard it's best to bring an umbrella as they tend to be more expensive down there.

It's too big for your checked bag? I wouldn't leave my checked bag partially open like a PP suggested with the umbrella sticking out. Honestly I would probably go buy a smaller umbrella that would fit in my purse or carry on.

If you don't really care that it might be taken, bring it. You can always point out that SW's site says it doesn't count against the limit.

I would go back to Target and get a smaller umbrealla. Do you really want to carry this around with everything else you have? You are already pretty loaded down....

Seriously? You would leave your suitcase partially open with an umbrella sticking out to possibly poke a baggage handler, break off or damage other people's luggage? I can't imagine why your bag was accepted at check-in.

OP - get a small, lightweight travel umbrella. This will fit everywhere and is much easier to carry around.

You are misreading the section you quoted. Each passenger is entitled to "one bag plus one personal item". So, you have your backpack and purse. Anything you can fit in those is fine.

The items listed, if they don't fit in the carryon bags, do NOT count as a "personal item" or "bag". SO, you can take your backpack, a purse, AND any/all of the listed items.

That covers the airline. As far as TSA...
Umbrellas (allowed in carry-on baggage once they have been inspected to ensure that prohibited items are not concealed)

Packing considerations aside- it is SOOO impractical to take a full size non-collapsible umbrella when you travel. And at WDW it can be downright dangerous, not to mention cumbersome. How did you plan to go on a lot of the attractions carrying it?

Do yourself a huge favour: run out to Walmart and buy a $10 telescoping umbrella. It will fit into your backpack with ease, and will be no bother to carry in the parks once you get there.

FWIW, I bought one of those large golf umbrellas while in WDW (it has Mickey on it swinging a club and it is AWESOME) and I had to bring it home on the plane. I flew SWA, and I had no problem using it as my pimp stick along with another carry on. And yes, it was a little cumbersome to get it safely stowed away. Get one of those super tiny ones and don't worry or call the airline directly to alleviate any worries. Travelling day is stressful enough already.
