I am looking for an umbrella stroller for my 45lbs son. He is 7 years old and suffers from severe flat feet. Our pediatrist says that it is a good thing that he is so light, because if he puts on too much weight they may not be able to control his pain at all. He wears prescription fitted orthodics at $250 a pop and they only help control is foot and leg pain. We often have to give him ibruprophen for pain management. He cannot walk all day in the parks and will ride when the pain starts. In any event we usually bring our double stroller for him and our 2 year old, but it is heavy and large. We are flying this trip and renting a car. I don't want to deal with the double. We have a chicco caddy that we use for the 2 year old on a daily basis and we love it (recommeded last year on the Dis of course). I need a stroller that will accommodate at least 45 lbs and I would like it to recline in case I have the 2 year old in it. Does anyone have a stroller that they would recommend?

Thanks
Deb

Try a Maclaren if you can afford it.We have the Triumph model,it only reclines a little but there are other models that recline fully. All Macs hold up to 55lbs.We're buying a Twin Traveller for WDW for my 37lb 4yo ds and 50lb 7yo dd.Here's a link to the website:Maclaren strollers

We paid $150 with the tax for the Triumph, and it was worth every penny. You can usually find them on places like craigslist used or last year's models on ebay for much less.I found the Twin Traveller for $175 used.HTH!

Double check with the folks at Maclaren about that weight limit the previous poster posted. When I purchased my Maclaren Volo (which I highly reccomend, but it doesnt recline) the rep. at Maclaren said that only the '04 and '05 Volos held up to 55 pounds. The previous poster may be right, maybe the rep. didnt know what he was talking about, but I just wanted you to be sure. I love the Maclaren stroller. It pushes like a dream and wish I had seen this years ago. My DD is 6 1/2 and will be 7 when we go in Nov. and she fits very well in the Volo. She weighs 43 pounds now and pushing the stroller is NO PROBLEM. You will not regret getting a Maclaren if you decide to go that route. GooD LucK!! :wave2:

Maclaren volo is definately the way to go with an older, heavier child. We love ours. It pushes like a dream and the kids are comfortable in it!!!

I think that I'll have to take a road trip to a Target or Toys R Us and try these out. I'd like to see how he fits and how it pushes before I commit. Unfortunately we only have Kmart and Walmart within an hour of us. I guess I'll get to check out the Disney store while I'm out. :cool1:

I just got my Maclaren Quest and so far I love it. It reclines, has the rain cover, folds easily, and has a basket. It was everything I was looking for. I did try it out in the store before I committed.

I also have the Quest (good to 55lbs) and love it. Wish I had found it a lot sooner! I also had a Chicco Caddy before the Quest. It was nice, but for long strolls it would hurt my back because it was so low (for me at least). The Quest is higher, is so easy to push, reclines, has a little leg extender for smaller children, and is fairly lightweight. It is also a bit more tipsy than the Caddy (when the child isnt sitting in it so watch hanging stuff from the handles). The sunshade can be positioned several ways, unlike the Caddys which was almost useless. Theres a little basket underneath, but its hard to get to. I got the Mac stroller organizer which hangs from the handles and it works great.

What we did with our daughter who had similar walking issues was to rent a double stroller at the park entrance ech day. It can be costly $10/day but was well worth it. SHe did not feel out of place and it had a sun shield to protect her from the sun and heat all day.

what are the differences between triumph and quest? Any preference? Why? For older stroller-aged child.

According to Maclarens website FAQ click here:

How long can I use my buggy—up until what age and/or weight? Maclaren buggies are designed and tested to hold up to a 55lb child; the twins are tested to hold up to 55 pounds each side. Most children determine at what age they no longer want to be in a buggy—some children want to walk when they’re 2, others when they’re 5. We suggest you let your child guide the usage of your buggy, while keeping within the weight limit.

Here is a link to the specs for their different strollers: Maclaren '05 specs

I like the triumph because of the carrying strap.I use the bus often and this is a huge help. The Triumph is also a little lighter and about $60 cheaper. Here's the links to the info on each model:
Triumph
Quest

arrggh, all I can find are 2005 specs. What are the weight limits for 2004?

My Triumph is a 2004,and the weight limit is 55lbs.The Quest is the same,we looked at those when I bought mine.Even my 2004 twin traveller is 55lbs each seat(I bought it specifically for WDW,my 7yo will want a stroller and I didn't want to deal with 2 seperate strollers or renting).HTH!

COOL! Thanks for letting me know! I tried to find an online instruction manual, but couldn't find one for 2004.

I took my 5yo ds with me to a bunch of stores. He is the same size as my short 7 yo, just a few lbs lighter. He sat in many strollers...any that we found that had 45 lb weight limits or greater. We even tried the Peg Perego ones. The only ones that had a tall enough back were the Maclaren Quest and the Perego Aria, I think it was. The Triumph I liked, but the back ended at the lowest part of his neck. Not very restful, lol. The Combi ones, if I tried to use the visor part, it was ON his head, lol. He didn't love that. He liked the Perego one, but preferred the Mac Quest. Mind you, these were all 2005s at BRU. I gambled that 2004s are EXACTLY the same size, and came home and ordered a 2004 Mac Quest from Albeebaby. $129 and free shipping.

Thanks for all the advice! Now, if all 3 get too tired, we can rent a double only when absolutely necessary and still have a stroller for the 2yo.

I HATE spending my vacation fund money before the trip, especially when it is more of it than I had thought. But if this stroller works as well for us as I think it will, it will be money very well spent.

if you just need the stroller in the parks, I would suggest you rent a double one there. They are huge and sturdy from what I can tell.

Just back from testing strollers. We went away over the weekend and I took time to try out some strollers. I tried the Maclaren, Combi and Britax which were the only ones rated for 45lbs and higher. I found the Combis to be very flimbsy with my 7 yr old in it. He is well below the weight limits, but still hard to turn and they (different models) felt like they were going to fall apart. The Britax (I'm thinking that name isn't exactly right) was very nice, but pricey and didn't fold as compactly as the others. I will be looking into buying a Maclaren. Many have suggested renting a stroller for the parks, but I still have need for a stroller for him in everyday life due to his foot issues and I might as well put the money into something I can use for awhile.

If he will use the stroller on future trips( this is not just a one time use) I'd look into a special needs stroller. In particular, Maclaren makes one that looks like there regular strollers, just bigger, that holds up to 100lbs. Convaid makes strollers that hold up to 200lbs in sizes to fit adults. Insurance may even cover it if is medically necessary. I'd check into insurance covering them because they make regular strollers look cheap :sad2: If you anticipate him needing use a stroller on a regular basis for him, look into it. Check out Convaid's website to see there strollers. Also check out Adaptivemall to see both the Maclaren and Convaid prices, as well as several other kinds of strolles. I've used both kinds and they work well. Good luck!

You can get a carrying strap to use with the Quest (or other umbrella) at www.combistrollers.com. It is made for the Savvy, I think, but works with my Maclaren.

And www.albeebaby.com has amazing prices on 2004 Quests, making the price difference almost negligible.

I am strongly leaning toward the Maclaren Quest. I think that it is between the Triumph and the Quest and at Albee Baby the price difference on the 2004 is as little as $10. Does anyone know if the Quest is better than the Triumph? I nearly ordered it a couple of hours ago, but it is more than I have ever spent on a stroller before. We really like the Chicco Caddy that we have and I've heard that there is no comparison with the Macs.
