Umbrella strollers for big kids?

DS is going to be 5 in April and most of the time, he's pretty good about walking with us. HOWEVER,there are times when it is just more convienent to a stroller. He's almost outgrown his old umbrella stroller (which is what I use most of the time) and I'm wondering if they make umbrella-type strollers for older kids. It also doesn't help that he's like his daddy and has legs up to his armpits. So while he physically still fits in the seat portion, his legs drag on the ground.

Any suggestions on brands/models??

MacClarens have a higher weight limit (usually 55 lbs.) and are a bit higher than the "cheap" umbrella stroller. After that, you're looking at a "special needs" stroller like the MacClaren Major. (Be forewarned, the price jumps- a whole lot- when the words "special needs" are added. lol

My almost 9 year old patient uses the MacClaren Major. It's his second one and very sturdy! Not sure about the cost because it's covered on his Medicaid.

We used the MacClaren stroller on the trip my son was turning 7; I brought it just in case. He weighed right at 55 lbs. at the time and also is tall.

Good things about the stroller - the foot rest is sturdy - supported my sons legs. The canopy is adjustable so his head wasn't poking through the top. Easy easy to push - was not weighted down by his weight. Only weighs about 7 lbs. and folds up well.

Only downside for me - didn't have a cup holder, but I purchased one and attached it to the handle.

Thanks for the info on the McClaren.

They don't by chance make a double umbrella stroller like that do they? My SIL is looking for one for next summer because she's got a DS my DS's age as well as a little one who is about 18 mos old and she needs a double stroller for them.

*edited to add--HOLY COW! I didn't know they were that much. Yeah..I'll def. be hitting Once Upon A Child to see if they have one of THOSE hanging about. I usually hit there for clothes, so I never looked to see what kind of strollers, etc they have.

Yeah, MacClaren makes a double (not special needs), but I'm not sure the individual weight limits. If your sister just needed a double for the trip, www.orlandostrollerrentals.com rents a fabulous baby jogger mini that seats up to 100 lbs. total. My 8 y/o (52 lbs and 47 in.) and 6 y/o (47 lbs and 44 in) were both very comfortable in it in Sept. when we rented one for the week.

Yeah she would need the one that holds 100 lbs because DNephew1 weighs about the same as DS. DNephew2 (although he is only a little over a year old right now) weighs in at a hefty 25 lbs. She's BFing him and only recently started solids and I asked her "What on earth are you putting in that breastmilk?" He's not fat..he is all muscle. He's just..HUGE.

Sounds like some good milk! But I would definitely recommend the baby jogger, what a joy to use, just awesome. If she would use it often, it would probably be worth buying; It's not cheap, but you'd never have to buy another stroller, it's that good; and for a double, by far the most maneuverable we've used (and trust me, we went through a lot).

Yes, they are pricey; I got mine on Target's website for about $114.00 and sold it on E-bay for $90.00
