thinking of bringing a very lightweight umbrella stroller for an almost 3 yr old boy. Do you think he will be very uncomfortable? Really don't want to pack a more heavy umbrella stroller because of up and downs on bus and also because we're driving and need the space.

what do you think?

Is he a walker or a rider? If he mostly rides in the stroller when you go out he may not be comfortable for a long time in a lightweight and inexpensive umbrella stroller. If he mostly hops in for a little while and then out again he should be fine.

I use a Maclaren umbrella stroller and love it--it's light but not so cheap. Reclines, sunshade, rain cover, pushes like a dream!

Its probably a good idea to take a stroller with you. Our last trip my 3 yr old wanted to walk--well that didnt really last to long, lol. We did bring 1 stroller with us for our youngest but ended up renting another pretty much everyday since my 3 yr old got tired.
Umbrella stollers are good. Does yours recline any?
We do have 2 umbrella strollers but I didnt like the fact they didnt recline to I bought one that does and has a basket. Its pretty lightweight and wasnt to bulky.

We bought a cheaping one at Walmart with a basket. Super lightweight and easy to fold. We planned on tossing it when we got home (if it made it). Well, it lasted through 2 trips (8 & 9 days each), got us throught the resort and airport and it still looked and worked great. Sold it at my garage sale for $7.00. DD was almost 4 and almost 5 when we took it. It was nice to have the basket and easy to carry on the resort/park buses, while other people were holding up the loading by trying to fold those big ones up, then had no room on the buses for them! Our daughter didn't nap by then so the reclining wasn't an issue. By the way she is not a small child.

When we went, we took one collapsible regular stroller for the 2/3 year old and also an extra just-in-case umbrella stroller for the 4/5 year old. I am glad we did. We used them both a lot.

FYI:

I liked having my own stroller b/c I knew it was clean, etc but we found that taking them on the busses were a BIG pain b/c by the end of the day, DH and I were each carrying a child and holding a stroller on a standing-room-only bus.

I just bought a cheap ($20) lightweight stroller at walmart. http://www.walmart.com/catalog/prod...e=1&dept=5427&path=0:5427:86323:118134:118135 It is not an umbrella, even though it is listed as one, but it folds flat and narrow. It has a sun shade, a basket and it reclines. It is made by cosco and was not a clearance item, they had actually just recieved the shipment. We have been using it at the mall an such to get my daughter used to it, and it gets broken in. ~KPmom

There is a stroller that you can "reserve" here on the DIS site. Folks pass it on after each trip and it is a nice, heavy duty reclining stroller. Check out this site:

It may be a help for you. I will tell you that in the past we used umbrella strollers for our older kids (ages 3-5) and while they were not the most comfortable for sleeping, they did the trick.

We just got back from our first trip. We rented a stroller every day for our big, 60lb, just turned 4 DS. It was the best $ we spent on the whole trip! Due to his size he is hard to push in an umbrella stroller and not so comfortable. The rented strollers were plently large for him and pushed like a dream! Because he's 4, he walked without complaining to busses, at the resort, etc. So not having it out of the parks was not a problem. My vote is to rent and not mess with a stroller on the bus. They seemed to be a hassle for the poor parents wrestling with them.
