The extra info there is “Please check with your airline for any size or weight restrictions.”

Some umbrellas are huge (like a golf umbrella), and likely wouldn’t be allowed as a carryon.

I have carried a small, foldable umbrella both in my carry on and in my checked luggage all over the world and have never had a problem.

This should be a sticky at the top of this page. The TSA site seems to be clear on what is and is not allowed. The problem is when agents at some airports are clueless. Besides, the latest tests show they miss about 85% of banned items anyway. An improvement of the 95% miss rate before that.
