Um, are bras considered clothing now??

OK - I guess I finally have a pet peeve! What is with all the visible bras lately? Seems having your straps showing or the entire bra is just in fashion now? :scared:

Background: More and more I have seen women with backless tops on - wearing a regular bra! Hi, here's the back of my bra. I just don't get it. Doesn't that defeat the whole backless concept? And it's UGLY! I have a few tops like that and I either leave the bra at home (I'm aware not every lady can do this) or wear a backless one. One of the women was actually working a cart in the mall.

A mom at school the other night showed up at orientation with a strapless sundress on. Cute dress, are those spaghetti straps? Nope, it's her bra! Not one of those clear or decorative strap ones, a dingy, been wearing it for years, stretched out, ugly beige bra. WTH?? :confused3 Who does that? Strapless bras are readily available still, aren't they?

At the movies on Sunday, a girl of about 14 struts in with a green bra and a white tank top on. The tank top is pulled down so the actual cups of the bra are sticking out above her top!! :scared1: I am seriously hoping her parents did not know she left the house like that!

then there's the whole racer back tank with a regular bra thing. It's weird to me.

I like to think I'm pretty easy going, but this just bothers me to no end! And yes, I'm sure someone here will tell me to move on and get a life. I'll try. ;) I just prefer nobody see my undies I guess.

I saw a girl at a coffee shop the other day with jean short overalls and a black lace bra. She was probably about 16? I just didn't get it..

One of the women at work yesterday wore a completely sheer gauzy top yesterday with just a bra under it! :confused3 She should have worn a tank top or something under it. It just wasn't appropriate for work, and I wouldn't have worn it like that at all-even away from work! I work with about 95% men, so I'm sure they enjoyed it! ;)

Maybe I'm just old, but I just don't get it!

I agree :scared1: But the braless alternative isn't any better.

Hello they make STRAPLESS BRAS! I have not been won over by the "decorative straps" yet. Although my sister has one and I thought she was wearing a cami- but it was her bra? (she's way younger than I am)

I don't get it?:confused3

Oh and I am reminded of a quote of my daughter's after she saw my sil's thong.

She said "Aunt T your underwear is showing"
T "It's supposed to"

My daughter "No it's NOT"

I know exactly what you mean and couldn't agree more. Having a daughter that just really starting to need a bra (not just a stretch of fabric in strategic areas) its frustrating to see this trend. I am telling her her bra is "under" clothing that should not show and the world is telling "go ahead" let it all show!!

She doesn't wear strapless things but she does have a racer back tank. I looked and looked for a bra in her size that wouldn't show and apparently they don't have such a creature! So, she has one with very thin straps that
she wears with it. As for tank tops  UGGG! Whether for her or for me; the arm holes are so big that it hangs down and shows the side of the bra. Someone told me to wear another shirt under it--the point being?? Its 90 degrees and humid; I don't want to wear two shirts!! So we only wear tank tops around the house.

I think I would rather see bras than all the cleavage on display here. YUCK! You would think Hugh Hefner was coming in search of new girlfriends.

Sue-Ellen Mishky started this trend, years ago. She got tired of being called "The bra-less Wonder" so decided to wear her bra as a top. The first time she wore it as a top, walking down the street in NYC, it caused quite a stir, and even a car accident, if I remember correctly.... :scratchin

OK, so it's not just a NJ thing!? Phew - it's all we can take with the big hair and overdone eye makeup. :lmao:

Darn that Sue Ellen and her bra as a top. I will say that the 14 year old with the tank top pulled down below the bra caused quite a stir. My DH looked down at DD6 and then at me and said NEVER! No kidding!

The tank top is pulled down so the actual cups of the bra are sticking out above her top!! :scared1:

Honestly, I would have said something to her. Probably something sarcastic like "Oh honey...I think that's your little sisters tank top you've got on...might wanna pull that up to cover up the girls...you look pretty silly".;)

Or maybe even

"Why did you even bother with the tank top if you're gonna wear it like that?":lmao:

I just think teen agers these days get away with WAYYYY too much in this world and dont' have any respect for themselves yet think the world owes them something. When you act like an idiot you're treated like one.:rolleyes1

You know, I sure was tempted. She was YOUNG and clearly looking for the wrong kind of attention - there was more to her "outfit" than I described here. Total train wreck.

It is a shame that girls think this is the way to get attention. I am really hoping I'm raising my DD to know this is NOT the way to go.

I get the eye makeup, but hair here is STRAIGHT! My poor dd12 has think, long, wavy hair, and straightens it up every morning, to look like everyone else.

The colored bra straps exposed under a tank top is all the rage at our mall. :confused3

I think I would rather see bras than all the cleavage on display here. YUCK! You would think Hugh Hefner was coming in search of new girlfriends.

We were in the credit union last week and the middle age lady assisting us had one of the largest cleavages exposed I'd even seen ! Mind you we were standing at counter and she was sitting, so DH and I had a clear shot :scared:! I was so taken back I felt like saying something, 'like honey, aren't the girls catching a draft' :rolleyes1?!?! But decided she was already making a fool of herself, I didn't need too also ;)!! I can't imagine this being credit union dress code :confused3. Not too mention, who wants to look
at middle age cleavage (unless it's your partner) ...yes, I can say that as I am middle aged! :rotfl:

I'm from the old world and we have a saying, 'If it ain't for sale, don't show it!' :lmao:

I don't even like seeing lacey stuff as part of clothing, even if it's part of the top. It always looks cheap. Showing the bra does that but also makes people look stinky for some reason.

I'd much rather see the pantylines that people seem to be so phobic about :confused3.

Oh me too, me too.

Having spent years concerning myself WAY too much over whether my bra straps are showing, in a small way, I kinda like that they are allowed to show right now. Gives my mind a rest. If only I could get back the years of worrying about it....

Plus, wasn't it Madonna who first started bras as outerwear? :)

This post makes me think of the movie "Selena" where the father throws a hissy fit when she goes on stage with her bra. She says it's not a bra it's a bustier' and he says "Its a bra with little sprinkly things".
But yes, I do remember back in the olden days when we wore our bra under clothes, hidden well.
I have a friend who's daughter is very well endowed. She wears a size 4 pants but a 42F bra. Her insurance won't pay for reduction... Anyway, she has to wear bras with the 2" wide straps and she wears tops with the string ties at the shoulder. And since her bras have to be ordered special and cost over $200 each she only has a few. They are ratty and ugly but she wears them on display like they are beautiful. I used to go to WDW with her and her father and not only hated the way she looked but the way men stared at this then 15 year old.

They are a little pricey - but I highly recommend the Lands End tank top - they have good "side ****" coverage.

I agree with you about the lack of respect for themselves. The sad thing to me is that its because this is what they are exposed to by music videos, tv and movie stars. They think this is an appropriate way to dress and apparently there are no parents saying "no, this is not the way you will dress". Too many mom's that seem to think "its cute".

Bless her heart!! That has to be horrible for her. I have a niece who is large (no where near your friend's daughter) and it has caused back and neck problems her entire life. She was never able to get a reduction either. I know another lady who has had terrible migranes her whole life and finally was able to get a reduction; now she is migrane free! (never knew this would cause migranes)
