My son will be studying at the University of Glasgow :teacher: in Sept for one semester. He would like DH & I to travel over to Heathrow to meet up with him on or about Dec 15th (when the semester is finally over) and stay through the holidays :santa: .

I am desperate for some help with this  ....I HATE TO FLY!!! I get all nervous and scared :scared: and closed in feeling...ugh...DH loves flying and I am one BIG baby about it all. MY son has said that I would love the UK (he was there for 3 weeks in Dec 2005) and that I need to get myself over there.

HOW LONG IS THE FLIGHT FROM BOSTON TO LONDON? WHAT IS THE BEST AIRLINE? SHOULD I HAVE A LAYOVER TO BREAK UP THE LONG TRAVEL DISTANCE? :confused3 :confused3

Thank you all for your replies to my Thread. :thanks: :disrocks:

flights are about....hmmm in the range of 8-10 hours but it seems much longer because of the time difference....you will gain five or six hours on top of flight time, and it will probably take a day or two to get over, but the flight will definately be worth it. unfortunately I can't offer you any help on how to cope for the flight as I've never personally had problems with flying

Flight time, around 7a nd a half hours, no real layover possible unless you fly indirectly through Iceland, France or Ireland but to be honest that won't cut your travelling time. Virgin, British Airways and American Airlines all do a direct flight, the differences are a personal choice rather than anything else. If you went with a british carrier though Ie BA or Virgin you'd find that the immigration queue would be shorter at Heathrow than if you went with an american carrier and the same back to the uS as most passengers on a virgin flight for instance will be be travelling into the uS on visa waiver forms. hope that makes sense
Oh, and bring an umbrella!

coming from the north of scot got to ask why you are meating your son in Heathrow and not in glasgow! sorry if am being nosey just curious :confused3

Well you know what, Karrie, my son just threw that out there..Scotland is also an option...I am so nervous about all this...ugh...He thought I would like flying into Heathrow...IS SCOTLAND CLOSER THAN HEATHROW???

It does not matter at all to me, London or Scotland! He will be done with classes around the 15th and then we would like to sightsee around the UK until Jan 1, 2007 as we will need to head home around that time as something about only being able to be out of the country or overseas for like 3 months w/o a visa??? :confused3

ANYWAY...bumping this for more data...

I am NOT excited at all about 8-10 hours FLYING....awwww!!! :sad2:

fraid scotland isn't any closer  can kind of sympathise with you - my mum is so scared of flying she wont even consider going outwith europe (4 hours is quite enough for her!) so you are so nice to consider puting yourself through that just to see your son - hope he appriciates his mum :)

You can definitely fly direct from Boston to Glasgow - it might be easier and an option worth exploring. However, if you are planning on visiting London anyway, I personally wouldn't bother. It's still about the same flight duration.

Personally I would choose Virgin Atlantic and fly from Boston to London (not sure if it's LHR or LGW they fly to). We have always had great service from VA, but the main reason we would choose them is because we are flying club members so can rack up some more miles to maintain gold.

If you are really dreading the flight that much, think of the reason why. Is it the fact of being squashed in such a small space for such a long time? If so, why not consider upgrading? It would be well worth it if it made a lot of difference. If it's just the thought of actually being in the plane that is the issue, why not take a course or read some books? A friend of mine read a book (sorry, can't remember the name) and it worked the world of good when she visited Australia to see her sister.

Good luck! :wizard:
