Do any of you out there know much about UHT Milk?

We have been to our local Panera Bread a few times in recent months and if you order white milk, it is Horizon UHT Milk (organic). It is the same as regular milk but the heating process is different and if you look at the packaging you don't have to REFRIGERATE it! It took me a while to accept that, it's just crazy to think about! You can keep it at room temperature for a while, but then when you open it, you have to drink it within the same time frame as regular milk. I have tried it and it's really not bad and DD liked it. It wouldn't be something I would drink just to drink.

But with our trip coming up on Feb 1-9, I thought this would be something cool to take along and not have to worry about refrigeration.

Problem is, I can't FIND it anywhere. I even got on Horizon's website and it's not even listed! Have any of you seen it around? For grocery stores, we have Cub, County Market, Schnuck's, Shop N Save, Meijer and Super Wal-Mart.

It's definitely not easy to find. I was hell-bent on finding it because I like the box shape better than the juice box shape. Fewer accidental squirts.

anyway, you can find it at Whole Foods, if you have one in your area. You can also buy it in the powdered milk aisle of regular supermarkets. One other brand (which is not organic) is Parmalat. It is a staple in Europe. Stores may carry their own brands too.

good luck!

Thanks for the speedy response!!!

Unfortunately, the nearest Whole Foods Market is in St. Louis which is about 100 miles southwest of us. We'll be flying out of there on Feb. 1, BUT we have an early flight so we won't be able to make a stop there.

I will keep my eyes open for your ideas though. I hadn't really thought about powdered milk. That is another option. We just need it for cereal, not really to drink.

Do you have a Safeway or a Trader Joe's near you? I also find the Horizon boxes of milk at those places.

They sell them at our local Target Supercenters (they keep them with all the other milk in the fridge, but they dont have to be kept cold until after they are opened). We use them a lot for when we travel.

Also our Starbucks carries them, but I dont know how much more it would be to get a whole bunch at Starbucks vs. Target.

Our Wal-Mart carries the Horizon chocolate and strawberry varieties. Not sure about the vanilla or plain. They are located in the grocery department by the diet bars and unrefrigerated soy milk. I think it is at the end of the pop-tart, breakfast bar aisle.

Room tempeture milk?:scared: YUCK. Do you ice it down to drink or is it just a storage thing? I like milk and drink it 2 to 3 times a day but once it's warm I can't drink it, only like it cold. Anything else I drink at room tempeture, but not milk.

Aren't those Horizon milks great? I discovered them after we evacuated for Hurricane Katrina and had limited refrigeration and was drinking a lot of milk because I was pregnant. I was planning on bringing them to WDW also in May for our DD. I buy mine at Whole Foods- the only other place I can think of would be Wal-Mart because they are a Horizon products distributor....I'll post if I can think of any other places...

Good luck!

Thanks for all the great responses. I will be sure to check our local Wal-Mart Supercenter! I guess I COULD buy them from Panera but I'm sure they'll be expensive there.

For the poster who was asking about drinking warm milk, yep, you are right. I definitely wouldn't choose to drink warm milk. But DD will just be using it over cereal, we're planning to take a big box of cereal down there. DH and I usually don't eat breakfast but we want to make sure she gets a good start every day.

And probably what we can do is get a bucket of ice in the evenings and have it iced down.

It really isn't bad stuff at all! They package it in special packaging that I think has foil on the inside and keeps all the light out.

That makes sense, and I agree kids do need to power up in the mornings and cerel and milk is so much better than grabbing a donut on the go, plus they can eat in their pjs and have a chance to wake up slowly instead of rushing them into clothes and heading for the food court. Just had a momentary shudder to think of drinking it. Although my godson use to drink it cold warm or even old (ack). He would just pick up his cup and drink, we had to make sure we monitered those cups LOL.

I buy them regularly at Wal-Mart. You can find them in the section with specialty foods (like meal replacement bars from different diet companies, etc.) They are not stocked near the milk- so ask someone if you can't find them. They are sold in packs of three and they are a bit pricey...but we carry them in our diaper bag on a regular basis to fill dd's bottle. Dd 4.5 drinks the strawberry kind like a juice box.

Just don't try to take them on the plane!

Your local grocery store and even walmart carries it in the baking isle with the condensed/evaporated milk although I don't know how many of them carry the horizon brand and are usually not personal drinks just a little bit bigger and they come in a pourable box. Best of Luck.
