My DW and I are California Dreaming about our upcoming trip to DL and thinking about Trader Sam's. We know we want to go there, probably more than once, but neither of us are very experienced drinkers. So, what should we try, what are your favorites and why?

I tend to stick to wine and beer and don't have a lot of experience with mixed drinks, but I like pretty much everything except for whiskey. DW is not opposed to alcohol, but has hardly finished a drink in her life. That being said, we are both interested in trying the mixed drinks and especially want to come home with a few awesome tiki mugs. Anyone care to share their favorites? What drinks do you think are the most beginner-friendly for DW? pirate::crazy2:pirate:

Thanks!

I had the Mai tai in a souvenir glass, but to be honest it wasn't as tasty as ones I've had in Hawaii. My favorite at Trader Sam's was the pear-ginger drink, but I didn't get anything crazy like the uh-oa so I can't really compare.

Thanks for sharing tiggerluvr!

Also wondering if anyone knows what gorilla grog is?

Favorite on menu : Krakatoa Punch - red and fruity - very tropical and yummy !!

Favorite off menu : Black Pearl - 3 types of rum with enough fruity juice goodness to take the edge off. Beware these are addictive and 3 knocked me on my butt..and i'm no lightweight ;)

Really cant go wrong with anything..love the shrunken zombie head too..ahhh..December can't get here fast enough!

I love the HippopotoMai-Tai it is a Traditional Mai Tai which is citrus flavored not pineapple. I do not like pineapple so this is a special treat and the reason we ventured to trader sams the first time. I am glad we did it was fabulous. I do not think you can go wrong. The drinks besides the HippopotoMai-Tai we have had and loved Krakatoa punch, mosquito mojito, king kamehameha mai tai, shipwreck, shruken zombie head, and Cadillac margarita. Hubbies favorite is Krakatoa punch, because it was sweet and punchy with a kick.
Enjoy

Grog is a tradition tiki concoction of rum, virus, and species. Different bars have different recipes. Gorilla grog is trader sams creation, it is used is some of the drinks.

This is great, guys. Thanks so much for the input. I think we'll have fun trying them out.

Not to hijack the thread, but about how much do the cocktails run at Trader Sam's? We are heading there Monday night for our very first visit. :)

It has drinks descriptions but not prices, sorry.

I like the Tikitikitikitiki Rum - probably *** I just like saying the name when I order!
But for maximum fx and the tiki glass experience, the Krakatoa and Ship Wreck are good - you really need a couple of people at least to share the Uh Oah!!

DH was very keen to build up a collection of tiki glasses to bring back to NZ and the CMs were very accomodating - we ordered a Zombie but decided the Zombie skull mug was just too darn ugly to take home, so they swopped it out for another of our choosing! You can buy the mugs without the drinks too.

Be sure to check out the food ahead of time too - you can build a nice little meal out of the very tasty bar snacks at TS. Recommend the pork flatbread and the green beans especially, but its all pretty good

Wish we weren't so far away from TS - one of our fave places to hang...have fun!

They average I want to say..$12 - $14 or so..more for the Uh-oa obviously but when we went our first time we had easily 6 or 7 drinks between the two of us and a flatbread and with tax and tip it was about $120.00.

It was WELL worth every penny and every time we go now it's a must do.
Every drink I have had has been strong and well balanced. This thread is making me want to go right now lol :)

I think I really need to try the Krakatoa & the Tikitikitikitikitiki Rum on my next trip. Thanks for starting this thread!

Thanks to everyone for all the really awesome information!!! Can't wait to try some of these in person :)

I'm rather fond of the Piranha Pool. It's like a blue slurpee with a kick! For me, I don't like "obviously alcoholic" drinks; I prefer ones that are more fruity, and this fits the bill nicely.

The glowtini at GCH is amazing too, but I had a heck of a time walking back to the hotel after that one. No idea what they put in there! :stir:

We are really looking forward to trying Trader Sam's! Thank you for giving me an idea of pricing, it has proved elusive to find in my search. :) I can't wait to try one of the fruity drinks! :thumbsup2

Another vote for Piranha Pool! Most of the Trader Sam's drinks are rum based but Piranha is vodka based and very tasty, but sweet and pre-mixed so fairly light on the alcohol IMO.
