Calling all DIS doctors..........

DD(7) has the stomach flu. She started vomiting at 11:00pm last night and got up about 5 times in the middle of the night. SHe's still sleeping right now so I'm not sure if she got it all out or not.

Here's my questions:

1.) She's on amoxycillian (sp?) b/c she had a wart surgically removed on Monday. Should I still give this to her today? (twice daily) Or, should I wait until she can keep something down?

2.) I know I should push liquids, but last night she would take a sip of water and couldn't even keep that down. Do I keep pushing liquids?

Any advice? TIA!

I would say keep pushing the liquids. Only not water, because it will not typically stay down. Go for ginger ale or 7Up or even Coke - the regular stuff and not the diet version. I tablespoon at a time (seriously). I think my doc told us 1 tablespoon every hour and then increase from there.

As far as the Amoxicillin, I'm not sure.

My DD started early this morning. Ugh.

As for the amox, call the pediatrician.

Maybe try some pedialyte Or Gatorade mixed with some water. I wouldn't push fluids right after she throws up. Give her stomach a little time then try some sips. Poor kid. Poor you. Good luck. Hope she bounces back quickly.

Maybe it's not "the stomach flu" (I'm not sure what that is...I don't think there is technically a "stomach flu"...maybe a virus?)...maybe it's a reaction to the antibiotic? :confused3 Anyway, I'd wait to give it to her until talking to the doctor, esp if she's can't hold anything down.

I had very little experience with vomiting kids...we're just not a vomiting family thankfully...but with one bout I remember being told to let DD suck on a popsicle.

Thanks. I did not know that water was not good. I did just call her pediatrician. They told me clear liquids and hold off on the amox. until she can keep the liquids down.

Hopefully this is a short lived flu.

Thanks for the responses!

UGH! Yours is sick too. So sorry. I was up with her all night and I'm 16 weeks pregnant so I am praying I do not get it.

Yep, her doctor said gatorade or flat 7-up. I hope she is able to keep down the liquids today.

Good luck with yours too!

From what I hear, it is going around her school so I'm pretty sure it is the flu.

Consider yourself lucky! I swear she gets the stomach flu every year. UGH!

Do not push liquids! Really, she needs to be drinking a teaspoon or so every 15 minutes - no more! You just want to keep her hydrated, but too much will cause her to throw up. Call the pediatrician regarding the antibiotic.

A couple of years ago we went through this really bad w/ oldest DD & the nurse at dr.'s office gave us this advice to "restart" her system. Put some cola in a glass, stir to let the carbonation out & to reach room temp. Give one teaspoon. If it stays down for one hour, give another. If that stays down for 1/2 hour, give another. In 15 min. give another.

If the above goes well, start w/ a liquid/soft diet.

Even at her age she got so bad we thought she might need the ER the way things looked. She was so miserable she laid for hours on the bathroom floor. Best to all who are hit with this right now!

Well, she's kept a whole bottle of gatorade down, diluted a little.

Now she has a 103 fever. I know that is not super high to some, but she's never had a fever past 101 that I could remember.

She said she wanted to eat something so I just gave her some crackers.

I'm on hold with the pediatrician to find out if it is safe to give her tylenol. (the Walgreens brand - I know about the recall)

I really hope this is not related to her foot surgery. Would these symptoms be related to an infection with her foot, if she had one?

I would call the doctor back and let him know she now has a fever. Also, amoxicillin is a strange antibiotic to give after surgery. I think I would get her back into the doctor.

Its not the stomach "flu", its a stomach virus. Influenza is a specific virus that effects the respitory system, not the digestive system.
Sorry, I don't mean to be one of those people, just wanted you to have the info :flower3:

I hope she's feeling better soon, there is noting worse than a stomach virus. I hope you are doing okay too, I inow I can handle any kind of sickness but when my kids get a stomach bug I feel so helpless.

I called the doctor back and they said to give her tylenol for the fever. If it doesn't go down, they said to bring her in. They said it was a good sign that she is keeping everything down and eating crackers.

They weren't concerned about the amoxicillin or the foot. I haven't given her any amoxicillin today. The foot doctor prescribed it. I'm guessing in case there is an infection? The doctor didn't see concerned about it. SHe said wait until the fever comes down to give her the amox though.

When I say foot surgery, she had a very large wart removed via laser surgery. I'm not talking operating room, going under surgery.

If the fever doesn't go down, I'll bring her in tomorrow. THe ped. didn't feel this "bug" has anything to do with the foot. She just said to keep checking it to make sure it doesn't look infected (red, swollen).

Poor kid is having a rough week.......... She's missing her last religious ed class today which she is sad about and will probably be missing softball & soccer this weekend. Oh well, at least the weather is supposed to be crummy this weekend........
