I have a job interview on Monday. I know that *nobody* wears pantyhose anymore, but they're still proper for a formal interview, right?

I'm wearing a navy blue blazer, skirt, and heels. Pearl earrings and necklace.

Would navy or nude pantyhose be best?

(I have not worn pantyhose in 6 years. Yuck!)

I wear pantyhose every day with my suits. If it's a pantsuit I can cheat and wear kneehighs. Yes, wear hose. It's still considered the professional thing to do.

The color doesn't matter. The nudes tend to be more shear and comfortable.

I'd go with nude.

We are required to wear hose at work if we have on a skirt or dress---no bare feet or legs. If we have pants on, we have to either wear hose or socks. Yuck.

I work in HR, if anyone showed up on an inteview not wearing pantyhose with a business suit, I would not give them more then the 10 minute thank you for applying intervew. I don't care if it is 110 degrees in the summer. You want the job you dress fully for the interview.

Thanks everyone. This is what I thought!

Nude it is. (Pantyhose, not me. ;) )

It's simply not true that nobody wears pantyhose anymore, as much as people here want to claim it. It's certainly not true wear I live. I'm wearing a pair right now and I'm guessing half the women at church who are wearing dresses will be. It's raining and overcast today.

I go bare with sandals, but if I'm wearing pumps (like today) I wear hose. Last week it was bright and sunny so I didn't wear hose with my lightweight skirt and sandals. Since hearing on the DIS that no one wears hose anymore I've been watching. Most women seem to be following the same rules I do and have hose on when they wear pumps.

For a job interview I'd definitely be in pumps and hose. I've had job interviews in August though, so I feel your pain.

This is good information to know. I plan on looking for a new job soon, after being in this job for 17 years. I work in a very casual place in an isolated place, so I don't normally see women dressed up. I know people keep saying no one wears pantyhose now, but I can't see dressing up in a suit and then blinding the interviewer with my ghostly white legs.

If you don't like wearing pantyhose, just wear thigh high stockings certainly more comfortable and they come in the same colors as pantyhose

I do!

I don't feel "dressed" without them, especially when attending a formal occasion.

I wear them when I have to dress up. Not wearing them doesn't look right on me.

As far "nobody wearing them anymore," that is not true. I'm seeing more and more women wearing them again.

So you would take the less qualified applicant over the highly qualified one because she wasn't wearing pantyhose??? This is just sad. I think panty hose are horrible. Thank God I don't have to wear them because I wouldn't. I don't even like saying panty hose (typing it it is bad enough).

Well, here's the thing. In a market where you have many more applicants than you have positions available, you can safely winnow down the applicants to those who are motivated enough to dress properly for an interview. In the field of applicants you have, you will still have enough fully qualified, and motivated, applicants not to have to be too concerned about losing a few in the process.

I believe in wearing hose when dressing professionally; however, I would not necessarily dismiss a non-hose wearing job applicant. It is just an indicator to me and I wouldn't even know what it indicates unless I could see the whole picture.

Having said that, you can't go wrong wearing hose to a job interview. I think there are very few people who are going to think poorly of you if you have them on. If you go without, you do take the chance of being interviewed by an "old-fashioned" person who is going to think you came to the interview not quite pulled together. I think in interviews it's always best to play it safe.

Now, if I have to equally qualified candidates that I have to choose from, I'm going to pick the one that seems most pulled together and professional. If the pantyhose makes the difference then so be it.

ITA - I always like to wear hose to formal occasions, and definitely for a job interview - I wear hose about 50% of the time, depends on what i'm wearing. I actually think they make my work clothing look and fit better, yet I do agree they are not the most comfortable.

This is exactly what I was going to suggest. I wore these all the time when I was flying and the company required us to wear hose as part of the uniform.

Well, here's the thing. ;) There are some positions that very few people are qualified for and some company officers who couldn't give a rats a** if their employees wear panty hose to a job interview or not - they want the person who can do the job best, not the one who bothers to put polyester on her legs. Those people are usually not very happy when they lose one of the very few qualified people they could've interviewed thanks to a lack of pantyhose.

This hasn't actually happened to me, but something of this ilk did happen to a friend of mine. And some HR heads rolled, to the tune of "you can pull this crap on XYZ employees if you like, even though you shouldn't, but NOT people who have 1234 qualifications! She went to work at GHK!"

This is a lesson in why you should keep training, keep learning, and look for those fields that have shortages. :)
