just a little background. I have a relative in the airline industry, and they get to keep what they find on the aiplanes it no one claims them. anyway, I ended up with a free 40 gig 3rd ( or 4th) generation iPod. After buying the overpriced cords and power outlet, (60-70$) I got it to work well for about a month then it went CRAZY. I hooked it up to the computer one day and I swear I got every error message on the dang thing. after about a week of slamming the iPod against my desk, and pressing random buttons, It worked again. until now. now It crashes Itunes and gives me the folder with the angry arrow on it, or getting into the iPod but it dies when I play a song. now it is sitting on my desk, making that annoying whirring noise. I love my iPod but uploading songs is a pain in the mule. can anyone help this fed up iPod owner?

I don't have one but, take a deep breath and then go outside and scream your heart out.

Try factory re-setting it and while you're at it uninstall i-Tunes from your computer (make sure you have all your music saved).

Once the iPod is re-set download the latest iPod software from the iPod website. Then re-install iTunes and try again.

This should only take about 10-15 minutes to do.

If that doesn't work go to your local Apple store (after Friday) and ask them to see if it is a quick fix (if it is they'll do it for free). You can even "get in line" via your home computer.

Hmm, I've had no problems with my 3rd Gen iPod.

It sounds like there's either one of 2 problems:
-Most likely you're having battery issues. It's pretty common on the older gens (mine doesn't run nearly as long as it did). Replacing the battery will run about $20-30. I saw a site that had iPod batteries that run a good percentage longer than the original ones did brand new. Send me a PM if you'd like a link.

-You may need to start from scratch as WatchinCaptKangaroo stated.

Apple's really good about customer care (which is why I've been an Apple user for nearly a decade), so an Apple store rep will likely be pretty helpful in the matter.

Just a side note: on the iPod power cord (about $30), the cord can disconnect from the plug portion. It's a firewire cord that plugs directly into your computer (and can power it from your computer as well), so the other cords were probably unnecessary. But if you did need to spend the $70, you still have an iPod for a whole lot cheaper than the majority of iPod owners. :smooth:

lol, all my local stores had was the firewire USB combo wire, and i did not feel like going mail order. I have been trying to get the iPod back to factory settings, but when I went to reinstall iTunes it got stuck for 7 hours. Also, when i run the iPod update/restore tool, it crashes too. I guess I should totally remove everything iPod from my computer and try again, right?

Perhaps this is the reason that the former owner maybe "left" the thing on the plane!! Just a thought........since I am very Protective of mine!

lol.... I think it is because my iPod and iTunes are different versions, and I have read that that mess both of them up, so I will uninstall Itunes and the updators, restore and update the iPod, and reinstall iTunes
