We are leaving for OKW tomorrow and I spent 5 hours today at the doctor for a suspected ear infection for my DS (confirmed) and a suspected broken arm for my DD (confirmed) :guilty: I am so sad that we are going to be at DW for 26 days and my DD is not supposed to swim. I know that there are worse things in life, but she is 4 and will be so dissapointed :sad2:

So sorry about your daughter's broken arm. Perhaps she can get Mickey, Minnie, and all of her favorite Princesses and characters to sign her cast! Hope you still have a great time!!!.

The exact same thing happened to DD when she was 6!! Broken arm and a heavy cast up to her armpit 3 days prior to a WDW trip. She got a lightweight waterproof cast a few weeks later, but had to have the heavy cast while the bone initially set.

The good news is that the characters really went out of their way to treat her special. Do take sharpies and have them sign the cast!!! DD loved the special attention - even during parades. Many of the walk about characters came up and "kissed" her cast, and several on floats pointed to her and then their arm.

You can buy "waterproof" bags to put over casts for swimming at a pharmacy, but they never worked that well for us, so we just avoided pools most of the time.

Our oldest DD fell off her bike and broke her arm back in 2005. If it was going to happen is was good timing on her part as she got her cast off the afternoon before we left for WDW. She had to wear a velcro splint for a few weeks but the was just to protect the healed fracture, she could take it off to go swimming.

Thanks for the well wishes. My brother just told me that his friend's DD got a waterproof cast that had a Gortex lining. My hopes are up :thumbsup2 We will have to get the hard cast on when we are at WDW on Thurs. or Fri. Does anyone know about these waterproof casts? My doctor did not recommend the bags that go over because they can leak and then we would have to have another cast put on. Thanks for any information :goodvibes

Only 4 years old, breaks her arm and is going to WDW for 26 days, oh no! Hopefully it will work out with the gortex cast. Definitely take lots of different colored sharpies for autographs with the characters.

Goretex casts are wonderful and real - BUT - they can't go on for like 10 days-2weeks, they need a heavy cast until the bone stabilizes. At least DD did (break at the wrist). I was so excited because everybody kept saying to just get a Goretex cast and I was so upset when the Dr said it had to wait.

I strongly suggest renting a stroller for your DD, as it gets hot and heavy.

Thanks, we still have her in a stroller when we are there - better for her to fall asleep than to be screaming tired and we have to carry her.:scared1:
Do they put the regular fiberglass cast on for 10 days - 2 weeks and then take that off and put the Gortex one? She has a splint on now and they said to take her in on Thurs. or Fri. Her bone was not displaced, but broken all the way through. Is that too early for a Gortex one?

We took DGD when she broke both bones in her lower arm and had the cast put on a day or so before we left. We bought one of the waterproof covers at a pharmacy but found that a plastic bag and duct tape worked better. The lifeguards at SAB gave her some strange looks but she made out fine and there was another child there with a cast who later in the week had the same arrangement with the bag and tape. Our DGD was older than OP child but it still might work. The bigger problem was the bumping on some rides made her very uncomfortable so some rides were completely out that trip.

That is what they did w/ DD - she got the splint in the ER, then we went to the ortho and he put her in a very heavy cast that went all the way to her armpit - he said it was necessary to keep the entire arm stabilized. Later, that cast came off (with Disney signatures all over it - they cut it carefully and DD still has it displayed!). Then, she got the little Goretex cast - only went to her elbow and weighed hardly anything and she stayed in it for 4 more weeks. We do live in Atlanta, so her doctors were all through Children's Healthcare of Atlanta. They were great.

We still had a really fun trip - and DD did get tons of special attention. Like, they actually closed a character greeting room at Toon Town and gave her a personal photo session with the photo pass photographer and Chip and Dale (her favorites). It was a bummer to have a cast, but all the CMs were so kind about it. I think they know it is a bummer for a little kid to be in a cast at WDW.

We had the same thing happen to DD just before a trip to the Vero Beach Resort a couple of years ago. She fell and broke her wrist. The Dr. put the cast on in the office. We bought a cover at the drug store. It was like a long rubber mitten and had a pump that took the air out of it so it stayed water tight. It worked well. She also used it when showering.
