Ugh. I'm stuck.

Well my equation looked like

(x)(2x) = 25 or (x)(1/2 x) = 25

and it threw in square roots and stuff.
And gave me a negative answer with decimals.

Now I think that you're the one overthinking it, Hils. :p

I'll just get the answer from someone tomorrow.

im a senior in highschool and i just spent twenty minutes on this and i cant do it.

=(

Well that's what I think the equation should look like.
I'm not sure.

The solvers aren't helping.
I'm hoping this is a trick question and I was right xD

Thanks for your time and help Shelby. :)

I really appreciate all of you trying to help. I'll just tell the teacher tomorrow that no one on the Interwebz could do it, and it therefore must be impossible.

Ahh i gots it!!!!!!

okay so 2x*x=25

or

2x^2=25

so you divide 25 by 2 which gives you 12.5

you than square root 12.5 which gives you 3.53553391

Now you take 3.53553391 and times it by 2 which gives you 7.07106782.

3.53553391 * 7.07106782 = 25.0000001....its not exactly 25 but its very very close

I hobbled on my super bad ankle all the way across my basement to get my calculator to do this. Yes, I hauled out the big boy (I have a TI-84 graphing calculator- the thing is beastly).

anyway.

L=.5w (length= half width) A=LW (area=length x width) A=25

simple subsitution

25=LW
25=.5W x W
25=.5W^2
25/.5=W^2
50=W^2 then square root each side (I have no idea how to type that on a computer)
7.07=W
and thus
3.54=L

Hope that helped!

what youve posted checks out, but how did you get to that point?

does 2x*x = x*(1/2)x?

its been quite awhile since ive had geometry.

He used the same base I did, I think. I can't really make out his formula, though.

yeah. i went about it using fractions verses decimals and that really messed me up. lol.

ummm...well 2x equals the width and x equals the length. So 2x*x equals 2x^2...i had geometry last year so its still kinda freash in my brain. But im taking algebra II this year and school doesnt start for another 2 weeks so this is been a good exercise

okay thanks.

and you took alge 2 AFTER geom? youre gonna breeze through that alge class. geom is basically an alge review + trig.

Thanks for the help guys and girls! :) I really appreciate it.

okay thanks.

yea, my school is way messed up!...in 8th grade you either take the traditional way (Algebra, Geometry, Algebra II, Trig or Pre Calc, Calc) or you take this program called IMP. If you take traditional you have to take the classes in that order. They do it because apparently Algebra II uses a lot of things from Geometry :confused: , but idk im kinda math/science geek :surfweb:

I did, too. I took Algebra I as a frosh, then Geometry, then Algebra II, and now I'm taking AP Statistics.

i did alge 2 and geom as a sophomore together. geom 7th period, alge 8th.

and this year i dont have any math.
