UGH! have to vent

in our town, it is an annual tactic. We have a super hard time passing the town budget and the cuts ALWAYS come from education. Unfortunately, the way the town charter is written, the education and the rest of the town budget have to be voted on together. This month, the budget was voted down and there are proposed cuts totalling $1,000,000!!! All from education!

"They" start scaring people into voting the next proposed budget. I am hoping this is the case for you and that you will still have a job!

Last year, they did something similar in our district with the EA's. They "deleted" about 60 positions. All of the EA's then had to reapply for the EA positions that remained.....according to seniority....it was a nightmare. Many didn't even know if they had a job a week before school started!!

Whatever happens for you, I wish you the best. Education has been taking a beating all over!!

I am a full-time special ed para. One of the last remaining full timers in our district. They are no longer hiring full-time. Only part-time for around 15-20 hours a week. So when a full-time para or any part-time para who works over 20 hours (meaning any benefited para) leaves, they are being replaced with a para that receives no benefits. These are non-union paras.

Great for the budget. Saves towns a lot of money. The problem with this is that many people want to work more hours. This leaves many open positions that noone wants. We have had positions open for months. Being a special ed para is a tough job. You have to work hard for very little pay. The perks were always the 180 school day calendar and the benefits. Not to mention the kids. :goodvibes

I love my job, which is why I remain. If they made me part-time and took away my health insurance, I would have to look for another job.
