Uber from St Pete (PIE) to Disney

Hi everyone, has anyone taken an uber from st Pete/tampa airport to WDW? If so was it a pretty smooth process or is it worth the extra money to go ahead and fly into Sfb or Mco?

Here's what comes up when I do a search...


Looks like rental cars for a week (didn't know how long or when you want to travel) are ~$350.

Even assuming you need a ride back to PIE, looks like Uber is probably the cheapest.

Can probably find a car service, but I'm guessing that would be at least $250-300 RT.

I wonder if there would be a potential problem of a driver actually selecting that ride. That's nearly 200 miles round trip and a lot of down time on the drive back.

I agree. I paid $45 dollar last week to get from the contemporary to flamingo crossings (12-15 min drive, surge pricing at 9:30 pm). It’s hard to imagine a driver picking this up..

Last year I was at a Disney hotel and needed a ride to Daytona Beach. I didn't think it would be a big deal. I was wrong.

Six different Lyft drivers cancelled. One arrived and then tried to get me to pay cash. He said that Lyft would only pay him $50 for the trip. I said that I understood but I wouldn't do it, and that he needed to cancel the ride so that I wouldn't get charged a cancellation fee. He did cancel.

I switched to Uber and finally got a driver.

From the time I started trying to request a ride, it took at least a half hour to get a driver.

Your situation is different because it's probably more typical for people at the Tampa airport to be requesting a ride to a Disney hotel. But if you need a ride back to the airport, I don't know if you would end up in a situation like mine.

Using Costco to price a one-way rental car from PIE to one of the WDW locations (Disney Car Care Center for Alamo and the Hilton near Disney Springs for Avis), I get $81 (plus gas) for a 24-hour rental mid-week in June, full size sedan or intermediate SUV. This will vary depending on the day chosen, of course, but I would price a one-way, one-day rental if one is willing to do the drive.

Keep in mind St. Pete airport is another 20-30 minutes beyond Tampa airport.

Agree! Not just because of the distance, but because of the traffic. It's easily a 4 hour round trip. Not worth it for a ride share driver. I doubt you would find a driver willing to do it. Just because a ride is listed doesn't mean there is a driver to do it. Fly into MCO.

I used to work with a guy who drove rideshare during his off hours. One day he got to work about a half hour earlier than normal (5:30am) and I asked him why. He was just finishing a trip from Orlando to Daytona Beach. He said a lot of drivers wouldn’t take the trip, but he liked to drive and figured he could get it done before his shift at work. Considering they don’t get any pay for the return portion of the trip unless they are lucky enough to find a customer wanting that specific route, I could understand why some drivers would say no to long distance trips. He did say the customer tipped him well, so he was happy about that.

PreCovid I had a conference in Clearwater I'd fly in for, then spend a week at WDW. I was generally cheaper to fly into Tampa, then I'd rent a car at PIE and drive to our stay at Swan/Dolphin. Price even with the rental was almost always cheaper the flying into MCO and renting to go to Tampa. Only once did I rent a car at Tampa, because I didn't need the car during the conference.

I think it would be much less complicated to just rent a car. Most of those online taxi drivers don't want to drive that far and then have to return the other direction with an empty car.
