Yet another bungled air strike by the U S

A U.S. military plane fired missiles Saturday into a residential neighborhood in Fallujah, killing at least 20 people and leveling houses in the restive Sunni Muslim city, police and residents said.
It was the first significant U.S. military action in the city since Marines ended a bloody three-week siege against insurgents. Since the U.S. forces left, residents have said that extremist influence in the city, west of Baghdad, has only grown.

U.S. Marines declined comment and referred queries to the U.S. command, which said it had no comment.

In the strike, at least two houses were destroyed and six others were damaged in the poor neighborhood.

At least 20 bodies were counted, and they were taken for burial immediately at the city's "martyrs' cemetery in accordance with Islamic custom of burying the dead quickly. At least three women and five children were among the dead.

Two other people died at the hospital, officials there said.

"At 9:30 a.m., a U.S. plane shot two missiles on this residential area," said the Fallujah police chief, Sabbar al-Janabi, as he surveyed the wreckage. "Scores were killed and injured. This picture speaks for itself."

It was not clear what the target was, but U.S. officials have said Jordanian-born terrorist Abu Musab al-Zarqawi may be hiding in the city.

In Fallujah, rescue workers combed the scene, searching the rubble for other victims. Slabs of concrete and steel reinforcing bars were upended and twisted, Associated Press Television News footage showed.

Water pooled from a 20-foot-crater in front of one of the destroyed houses, apparently from where one of the missiles struck. One man displayed several Qurans burned in the strikes.

Outraged residents accused the Americans of trying to inflict maximum damaged by firing two strikes one first to attack and another to kill the rescuers.

"The number of casualties is so high because after the first missile we jumped to rescue the victims," said Wissam Ali Hamad. "The second missile killed those trying to carry out the rescue."

THESE KINDS OF INDISCRIMINATE ATTACKS MUST STOP :(

THESE KINDS OF INDISCRIMINATE ATTACKS MUST STOP

Soooooooooooooo, I guess I must be missing the posts like this you put out everytime someone is murdered by a car bomb.

Must look closer for obviously no double standard exists here now, does it?

JimB well we all know the murders will try and murder at every opportunity. But as the U.S are there to protect and serve why do they need to kill innocent. I'm sure you'll do your best to try and justify it JimB

Coalition says it hit TERRORIST safe house

Saturday, June 19, 2004 Posted: 12:19 PM EDT (1619 GMT)

BAGHDAD, Iraq (CNN) -- Hospital officials and an Iraqi interior ministry official said 18 people were killed and nine were wounded in a U.S. airstrike on Fallujah, Iraq, on Saturday.

The coalition said it hit a "safe house" linked to the anti-coalition network of Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, who is blamed for many attacks against U.S. forces and Iraqis.

Witnesses and survivors in Fallujah on Saturday said two U.S. F-16s destroyed two houses with two missiles.

The coalition said it used precision weapons to destroy the safe house after receiving intelligence from multiple sources.

On Wednesday, a senior Pentagon official said that there was intelligence that insurgent leader al-Zarqawi and members of his organization might be hiding in the city.

The Jordanian-born al-Zarqawi has been blamed for several attacks in Iraq, including Thursday's car bombing outside an Iraqi army recruitment center in Baghdad that killed at least 35 people and wounded 145.

News footage from Fallujah showed people milling around and picking through the rubble.

The March 31 killing and mutilation of four U.S. security contractors in Fallujah sparked fierce fighting throughout April between Marines and fighters, causing scores of deaths.

Fallujah leaders and coalition officials eventually were able to put a cease-fire into place, in part with the deployment of an indigenous police force patrolling the town and the repositioning of Marines.

Since early May, things have been relatively quiet in the town located about 30 miles west of Baghdad.

A U.S. military official last week said that while strides have been made in bringing peace to the town, more needs to be done.

He cited removal of foreign fighters and heavy weapons, and the capture of those responsible for the March 31 killings and an attack in February that led to the deaths of at least 20 Iraqi police officers.

Ummmm, Yahoo has already changed their head line..."U.S. Targets Al-Zarqawi Network, Kills 16"

It IS a war, you know.

These people bomb innocent people (and even sometimes behead them) on a daily basis, even their own fellow country men...where's your outrage for that??

Of course you'll only believe what was first reported and not the actual updated version of events.

Was waiting for somebody to finally come out with that one. Wow. But at least you conceded to the fact that if still under Saddam rule, they had other ways of dying.

Yeah after the deeds are done....times were good under "Uncle Saddam".....

********

This is the town where Saddam murdered 5,000 Kurdish civilians in a matter of hours on March 16, 1988, when his military sprayed and shelled them with VX, sarin and mustard gas.

The population cowered in their homes, or ran out into the streets, or crowded into government air-raid shelters built for the Iran-Iraq war. I peer into the remnants of one belowground shelter, now a fetid pit filled with garbage, where 120 men, women and children perished. Seventy-year-old Mohammed Rashid, wearing the traditional Kurdish turban and baggy pants, shuffles over and tells me how his brothers and only son died there.

"It smelled like eggs and oranges. We couldn't breathe, and some just laughed like crazy, and some had burns," he says, in the numb voice of a survivor.

This was a revenge killing by Saddam. Some Iraqi Kurdish leaders had helped the Iranians. Such aid was not surprising: Saddam's troops had slaughtered more than 100,000 Iraqi Kurds and razed 4,500 Kurdish villages in the 1980s.

I guess if you ignore evil, you won't have to vanquish it.

Van Helsing, you believe in truth???????!!!!!!!!

Surely you jest!!!!!!!!!

You've been booted off this website and came back under a different moniker andpost the same anti-USA garbage you did when you were jjcollins, and never post about the terrorist activities (any articles about Paul Johnson you might want to post??) and you belief in truth???????????

Don't make me laugh. You wouldn't know truth if it came up and slapped you in the face.

I am so glad that the men who fought in WWII did not have the media coverage of today to blast every friendly fire or miss calculation. It is a awfull to have innocents killed on either side of the war by friendly fire or terrorists. The fact remains this is war and in my book there is no sanity in war and there is not a rule book that is to be followed by on side and not the other.

I feel that those who are in arms about the wrongs of war need to get off their collective behinds and go over to fight in the war the way they invision it should be done and with perfect 20/20 vision to make sure not a single error can happen. Until then please move to the back of the bus and let the driver of this crazy mixed up war do the driving.
