U.S. Government to start charging $10 fee to visitors

According to CNN (http://www.cnn.com/2010/TRAVEL/02/26/travel.promotion.act/index.html?hpt=T2) a new program is about to start where visitors to the U.S. will be charged a $10 fee for "Travel Promotions". This will apply to all countries that are part of the Visa Waiver Program.

The good news is that Canada is not part of this program (http://travel.state.gov/visa/temp/without/without_1990.html#countries) but the list of countries that do is pretty long.

hmmm Taxing people coming to your country, so that you create an agency to attract people to come to your country. Sounds like something they would do in Canada.

Well, not all of us are Canadian citizens yet! I know there are a few people who have posted here about Permanent Resident cards and US travel. There isn't a board for Canadian Residents Who Come From Countries in the US Visa Waiver Program, so I think it's good information to put out there.

But let's hope it doesn't happen. That is just crazy.

There are many countries that charge what they call a travel tax or an exit tax. The most I have ever paid was $25 US and it applies to all people visiting that country. So really this is nothing new.
