U.S. Gov says Disable Java

http://abcnews.go.com/Technology/wireStory/us-government-tells-computer-users-disable-java-18195912

Any idea what will happen, if anything, if I do disable Java? Will this cause other programs to stop working? If not, what is the point of Java?
As far as I know, it would only cause problems on websites that use Java. There are a number of websites we use at work that require Java to function. If we disabled Java, we wouldn't be able to sue the websites.

Our entire financial/student system at work requires Java to work.

But........but........but......

I followed the directions to disable it from Google Chrome on my new laptop (Windows eight), but it wasn't there. So, I guess I don't need it.

Oracle says they are releasing a big batch of fixes for the problem on Tuesday. Till then, I have disabled all java plug ins and add ons in both IE9 and Firefox, just to be on the safe side. Just checked most of the sites I use regularly..and so far all of them work fine!

LOL about the poster Java.

Anyway, I have a Google Chromebook which doesn't support Java. I've had no issues with webpages without it. Our DS is rebuilding our PC today and will be reloading everything so we'll see what he thinks. He does IT for a living.

Bear with me.....I'm not exactly computer savvy. :rotfl: I disabled Java, but do I also need to disable java script? If I do that then facebook backgammon won't work!!! :scared1::laughing:

Nope ... the Java plug-in and java script are two different animals. Don't worry about any java script stuff

When I went on my netbook to disable Java, I saw that Firefox had blocked it on October 30th due to security issues.

So apparently I haven't had it since then and didn't even notice.

I have a question. I followed the instructions on microsofts page. Open java console, go down to default, uncheck microsoft internet explorer and mozilla family. Click apply and ok..I did that..now I just helped a friend do it while she was online, and when I opened mine back up..both of those boxes were rechecked..Did I do something wrong???
