Typical crowd levels at Disney Springs?

We were at WDW last November and went to Disney Springs one evening. It was absolute madness. Wall to wall people everywhere, you could hardly move even outside, and every outdoor stand had lines 15-25 people deep. We didn't enjoy our time there at all. It was a fairly slow week at the parks, so we were thrown by the crowds there. I do believe there was a private party at MK that night, so wondering if extra people may have opted for DS that night? At the time, we vowed to never go to DS again and we ended up claustrophobic, drained and with kids overwhelmed by the massive crowds. However, I have heard so many people speak fondly of DS, so wondering if we were there on a flukey extra swamped night. We are going back this April and wondering if it's worth giving it another chance. What are the typical crowd levels during non peak season? Do you think we just hit an extra crazy night?

It's not nearly as busy during the day. Lots of folks go only at night, after the parks, so that's when it's the busiest. Maybe go in the morning (I think DS opens at 10:00), then do lunch there (I love Wolfgang Puckett Express!), then off to a park?
