With Yyphoon Lagoon being closed for so long with renovations, what are the chances it will be open this December?

I usually travel to Disney in December. This past year we went in Dec/08, March/09 and going back in Dec./09. I have always wanted to go to Typhoon Lagoon. I keep missing it!!! Three years in a row Ihave missed it! LOL

It has always been closed for rehab? Is there a good chance it wil be open this Dec?

Thanks

According to the rehab/closers list:

Typhoon Lagoon - Closed for rehab from October 26, 2008 to March 22, 2009

Maybe they will have a shorter refurb for it this winter since they just finished this long refurb, and then possibly do a longer refurb on BB like they just did to TL. haha not sure if that makes sense. I'm not sure if they have released if they will do a winter refurb on TL yet.

I'm sure Cheshire Figment will eventually chime in but I think the refurb schedule is pretty well set.

There will always be a water park closed in December. It has to do with the fact that there is not a lot demand for water parks at that time and the need to only decorate one park for Xmas.

I don't know if they switch off who goes first or not which would mean every other year TL would be open in December.

This year TL's refurb was more extensive than other years because of replacing the floor of the wave pool and it was best to do it second starting early.

Since Typhoon Lagoon was closed this winter, it should be open next winter for your December trip. They always close a water park during the winter months for refurb and they take turns. In 2007, we went to Typhoon Lagoon in Feb while blizzard beach was closed and then this year blizzard beach was open while Typhoon Lagoon was closed. I think that it is safe to assume that you will be able to enjoy Typhoon Lagoon this December. Have fun!

Actually they don't take turns and Typhoon Lagoon has historically been closed Nov/Dec and BB is closed Jan/Feb. The extended TL rehab changed things this past year but in all likelihood they will resume the 'regular' schedule of TL being closed Nov/Dec because BB is automatically 'decorated' for Christmas while TL is not.

I missed this one. Why did they redo the wave pool floor? Just from age and wear or will it be less scratchy when you fall over?

The intense wave action was probably eroding the floor. Most likely in an area you would never see.

The wave generator works just like your toilet, a tank (actually I think 7 tanks) fills with water and it is let go all at once.

They can manipulate the size and how they break by adjusting the water levels and the timing of the doors.

There is a you tube video on how it works. I just can't find it now.

Just found it.

Actually in the past each park has closed 1 month every year for a minor refurb.

TL had a sinkhole under the wavepool and needed major work. This is the first lenghty rehab/closure I can remember, and TL has been open 20 years.

I wonder if its because Xmas fits better at BB.

You know the snow and all.

I think TL was due to open yesterday, does anyone know if it did?

Any reports?

I'd love to hear about any changes. :)

Are you sure about this? Because I know that when we were there in December of 2006 Typhoon Lagoon was open, but Blizzard Beach was not, and at the very beginning of March in 2007 Typhoon Lagoon was closed, but Blizzard Beach was open. I remember it specifically because my husband was disappointed that we couldn't go to Typhoon Lagoon and settled for Blizzard Beach (which neither of us really liked). But we have pictures of being at Typhoon Lagoon in December of 2006.

It feels like it's switched back and forth since then.

TL has been closed for about six months due to cracks in the lagoon floor which were beyond patching repair. It was necessary to completely tear out the wave pool and rebuild it. To give you an idea of the amount of concrete used, they had to allow 26 days for the concrete to properly cure before letting water back in.

When I had last checked (I start working back there later this week) I was told that other than replacing the wave pool only the regular rehab work that would have been done during the normal nine week closing was done.

As far as annual closing more than likely TL will always be closed first. This is because the theming for BB is winter and Christmas. This means there is minimal additional cost to make sure that BB is decorated for the holidays; while it would take a lot of money to decorate TL fro Christmas.
