Hello all!

I was wondering if anyone can tell me what type of vacuum cleaner is in a 1 Bedroom villa? We're thinking of buying some of those "Space Bags" to pack our stuff in, since we're going down for 2 weeks in December and want to minimize the amount of luggage that we take.

We really like the "Space Bags" that has an opening that you use a vacuum hose to suck out the air.

Do the vacuums at the villas have this attachment?

Thanks in advance!

Vacuum? What vacuum? There's a vacuum cleaner in my vacation home? :teeth: :teeth:

Seriously, the ony vacuum cleaners I've noticed are the upright kind - I don't think they have any attchments.

Perhaps someone who has actually used the vacuum will confirm or correct. :)

Best wishes -

Okay, thanks you guys. We'll have to think of something else to save space in our luggage.

They now make space bags that you roll the air out of with a special valve that doesn't allow the air back in - no need for a vacuum cleaner. They aren't quite as effective as the vacuum ones, but they do work pretty well.

If you are flying, remember the weight limits on checked and carry ons have been reduced. Just because you can 'suck' out the air to put more stuff in the luggage, the weight is still there. Check your airline weight limits (most charge over 50 lbs.) and weigh your bags, you might find they will charge you $25 or more a bag if you go over.

Bill is right and on some travel message boards I have seen posts from UPSET travelers who happily used those bags to get "everything" in one bag and then got hit with big charges.

On some airlines its up to $50 for overweight and it can be PER flight. So if you change planes in Atlanta for example you get charged TWICE!!! yikes!

Why after all these years does the weight of the bag have to be under 50 lbs? Does it save on fuel or something?

The airlines are trying to minimize their worker's comp costs by keeping down the weight their baggage handlers have to lift.

Also I suspect they have to do something to balance out the overall weight since most of us are getting fatter and fatter! :)

Spend one week behind a ticket counter or in a baggage office at any major airport and you would quickly find out why there are weight limits on baggage. JMO

Elaine---

You are right. I did see the space bags that you can roll the air out of.
They were on QVC.

I think those weight limits have always been there, but since so many airlines are having financial difficulties now, they've just started to enforce them as a way of generating additional revenue. The airlines who aren't in bankruptcy are probably charging the fees because they can since "everyone else is"! ;)

I had a trip to Israel (my sister lives in Jerusalem) last year and I picked up a pack at either Linens & Things or Bed, Bath & Beyond. And used one of their 20% off coupons! :thumbsup2

This might come as a surprise to some -- CarolMN, are you listening? ;) -- but there is also a washing machine and dryer in that 1 BR villa. Save the weight by not taking as many clothes and do a load or two or laundry. Just an idea -- it's helped us immensely on keeping suitcases light and relatively empty for all the stuff we end up taking home with us.

LOL, RoyalCanadian!

Mr. Washing Machine and Mrs. Dryer are very good friends of mine. :teeth:

CarolMN,

Mr. Washing Machine and Mrs. Dryer are also good friends of ours. We've lightened our bags considerably when we travel to our DVC home. As a side note, Carol, I see you're from Shoreview. My hubby's cousin just left our house in NE PA this morning to head back to Shoreview after attending her nephew's high school graduation on Saturday. She and her husband visited with us for a few days while in town. They live on Turtle Lake Road. Are you familiar with that area?

The washer and dryer are one of the biggest reasons I love DVC, believe it or not.

I hate schlepping luggage, so the less I have to pack, the better!!!!!!

We love the washer/dryer too. This is just going to be our first flight with our 2-year-old DS and with the stroller and car seat, my DH just wanted to try to limit the amount of suitcases we take.

But, you're exactly right that there is limits to the weight of the luggage before the airline tacks on a charge. I always weigh my luggage and can't believe that I didn't even think about this THIS TIME.

I think that I'll just use my same packing strategy of packing different items in the large storage bags (for convenience) and not worry about trying to save space. I'd rather take two EXTRA suitcases than have to pay extra money for a bag being even 1 pound overweight.

This is one of the reasons that I love the DIS...you guys always help me get my head back on straight!
