Granddaughter is home from the hospital now (had her tonsils and adenoids taken out) and my son-in-law just got her prescription filled a short while ago.. I have NEVER seen such a HUGE bottle of tylenol with codeine (liquid form) in my entire life!!!! And there's even a refill on it!

Someone please tell me that this is a lesser strength than what they give adults.. If not, I believe I'm going to be on some serious "bucket duty" during the time period she needs to be taking it.. They gave it to her in the hospital at 1:55 p.m.. About a half-hour to 45 minutes later my DD and son-in-law were bringing her home in the car and she started to vomit.. I suspect it was at least partially due to the TC on an empty stomach..

Anyone here with experience regarding liquid TC for their children? :confused3

one of the side effects of codine it vomiting .. maybe they can get her somethings esle

My ds had that operation 10 yrs ago so perhaps it isn't done the same way anymore. My ds was almost 3 and he literally came home and ate waffles that afternoon. It was truly bizarre. He slept a lot for the next day or two (probably because of the anesthesia) but never really had pain til almost exactly a week later which is what the ENT told us would happen as the scabs dissolved. We did get a big bottle of liquid tylenol w/codeine but didn't use it but maybe once or twice. Noone in my family tolerates codeine well.

My friends daughter vomited for several days after having her tonsils taken out this summer. I don't know what her pain medication was...Perhaps this is just a regular side effect of the surgery?

(simply offering a guess--my friend's daughter was 5 for her surgery).

When DS, now 17, broke his arm when he was 7 and needed to have it surgically pinned and repaired they sent him home prior to the surgery with this. The day of the surgery when they brought him back to his room he still had that in his system and they gave him more...he drank some soda and everything promptly came back up on him. I felt so bad for him. He refused any and all pain meds. after that. :grouphug: to your grandaughter that she is feeling better real soon! :wizard:

More common side effects may include:
Dizziness, light-headedness, nausea, sedation, shortness of breath, vomiting

Got this off of www.google

Thanks for the info.. I just can't get over the size of that bottle and I keep thinking to myself, "This couldn't possibly be the same strength they would give to an adult!" :confused3

She's sleeping now, so hopefully she won't need any of it tonight..

I had my tonsils taken out last January (yes I am 34 years old!!!) and I felt horrible!

I know kids tolerate it better that adults but I couldn't taste normally till April! The scabs coming off was the worst. Just when you think you are better they start peeling off and you feel like you have needles in your throat when you swallow.

Good luck with her!

Tara

 to your granddaughter for a speedy recovery.

I had my tonsils out 2 years ago at the ripe old age of 40. I know I was in pain for a LONG time. It was a good couple of weeks before I started to taper off on the pain meds. They say it's much worse for adults than kids though. The vomiting could also be a holdover from the anesthesia but if it keeps up contact her doc for something different.

Try to be sure there is a little food in her tummy before she takes the TC. The nausea is less when not taken on an empty stomach.

My DD(13) had her tonsils and adenoids out in late August 2004. Sadly she was in so much pain that she was regretting it for the entire two week recuperation! The tylenol with codeine is needed, just make sure she's eating something (soft, soft, soft) to help keep it from irritating her stomach. Just a warning, keep her lying low for almost the whole period, they really need the time to heal!!! And the gross part is when the scabs come off, you'll be able to tell!

Unfortunately my daughter's voice didn't return to normal for about three months, we were all terrified that she would spend the rest of her life talking like Minnie Mouse! After a couple of followup visits to the Otolaryngologist we finally started to hear her real voice come through. The great news is that she hasn't had strep since then!!!!! My DS's best friend had his out this year and he had a similarly excellent health improvement. Seemingly suprisingly his previous long term stomach aches disappeared with the tonsils!

Did they give her that huge bottle of the liquid form? There's even a REFILL on this thing!! :confused3

I believe another common side-effect is constipation.

I had Tylenol III and Vicodin after I had pins in my finger about 12 years ago. Great stuff!

"Funny" Tylenol III story... a former boss of mine once visited her mother-in-law after she had surgery and found her rather "altered". She asked her father-in-law what she had taken. He said "Just that Tylenol they sent her home with. She's been asking for it a lot." My boss looked at the bottle and saw that it was Tylenol III. She pointed that out to the husband and he said "So, it's just Tylenol." My boss pointed out the "III" along with the labelling and said "Do you think that they just put 'Threes' in there with some Tylenol?!?!?"

She should have some food in her stomach. I take pills for my headaches that have codeine in them and it even says do not take on an empty stomach. If I do, i feel like i am going to vomit.

I had my tonsils out as a young adult. The gave me a phenergan and demerol syrup for pain. Every time I tried to swallow it , the red syrup poured out of my nose. :rotfl: Although a fun parlour trick, wasn't very hepful. ;)

Ice cream worked better. :teeth:

I think the med they gave my DS was called hycet (tylenol with hydrocodone). It wasn't a huge bottle (maybe 120cc or 4oz) but it did have a refill. I think hydrocodone is stonger than codiene so maybe it's a smaller bottle. We also filled a script for phenergan gel that you could rub onto the wrist or stomach for nausea. Plus, we had a script for tetracaine suckers (ds wouldn't touch). He vomitted twice before we left the surgery center and once at home. He was in pain for several days and had tons of gunk in his chest...it was kind of scary. I still think his voice is high and it's been 8 months. We haven't had strep but he had a two ear infections and one sinus infection this fall/winter (darn). He has allergies but he can breath at night since his huge tonsils aren't blocking his airway!

Both of my kids got sick on the car ride home from the hospital after having a T&A. Once they were home, they didn't get sick again. I assume the movement from the car along with all the drugs in their system was just too much. Hope she is better in the morning.

DD had the same surgery when she was 7
and she had it done in ALbany so we had a LONG drive home after but that was where Dr "Jason" does his surgeries

and Yes it was a HUGE bottle of TC and a refill and so long as she ate a little something she was fine
but Contstipation was a small issue she just drank alot of water and that helped with that

Hope your grandaughter is feeling better soon :wizard: :wizard:

Wow, I am pretty familiar with phenergan (shots and pill form), but have never heard of it in a gel form.
