As things stand for now, our check-in day will be on a Sunday. Now I'm wondering if that might not be a great idea, since we really would like to have a chance at the 1500 loop.

Any thoughts?

Also I'm wondering about the safety of our bikes on a long drive while they are on a bike hitch. Even with locks, will they still be safe? Anyone ever had a bike stolen while hitched to the back of the truck/car?

We have never had our bikes touched on any trips...are you hoteling overnight? That would be likely the longest amount of time they would be out of sight, but unless youre staying in a rough area, I wouldn't worry.

And hopefully someone wiser than me has check in insight. I think we checked in on a Sunday both stays at the Fort and once we got 1500 and once 2000 (i had faxed a 1500 request both times).

Yes, we will be staying overnight in a hotel. I'm glad to hear that you've had no problems so far. Hopefully that will be our luck too.

Bikes have always spent the night in motel room with the family in our case.

Actually I think your chances of getting a site in loop 1500 are better with a Sunday check in. Most of the weekend campers will be checking out on that day.

When we travel with the pup and overnight at a hotel, our bikes have never been bothered. I try to park under a street light in the lot in a place where I can see it from our room. Its always worked out.

Well, the Sunday check-in sounds like a good idea now.

I'm still thinking about the bike situation.

With 2 adults and 2 kids the first floor was a must but when one gets to a motel later than anticipated steps can lead to a better night's sleep.

Officially 1pm, or when ever it's ready.
