Two one-way flights cheaper than roundtrip

Anyone ever get two one-way flights cheaper than one round-trip flight from various online travel sites? I couldn't find a roundtrip flight that was cheap enough or had the schedule I was looking for, but when I searched for one-way flights I had many more choices and the combined price was actually less than the roundtrip quotes. And the two legs were from the same airline too. But I couldn't get the flights I booked as one roundtrip, at least not from sidestep, expedia, etc.

Something to consider if you are not finding the flights in your price range or time schedule.

I've booked my dd and dh on JetBlue into Orlando from Boston because the flight time was what I wanted and the fare was great. However, they will be flying back, from Tampa, on Delta/Song since their fare is better, as is the time. Sometimes it is cheaper to do a one-way each way....and with a different airline.

As most of the low cost carriers (JetBlue, AirTran, Sowthwest) sell one way fares, it is very easy to book 2 one ways to save money. Several trips I have booked SW one way and Song/Jetblue the other.

Because this way of booking airfare is getting must more common, travellers are not singled out as often for extra screening (but one still should be prepared for it)

We did two one-ways for next weeks visit to WDW. Airtran down and Southwest back. Was much cheaper and better schedule (gave us more time before we leave next Friday).

I do it all the time, actually, I am doing it next Sat. AA down, & Spirit back. We seem to fly the most busiest times of the year(holidays). I try to get our airfare in the ball park of 200.00 rt non stop.

Below is an earlier thread on this topic.

Hope this helps

I've done Detroit to Orlando on Southwest and Orlando to Detroit on Spirit. No problem at all. We thought we might experience more security screening, but that was not the case.

DH and I actually did this in November flying from Philadelphia to Las Vegas. We flew out SW and returned on America West. The price was better and the AW return time was way better than anything SW had available at that time. I actually got the idea to do this on Sidestep.com, a great booking site. I did book through each airline's web site separately, not on Sidestep.

I just saved $200 by booking US Airways from MCO to PHL and then CO from EWR to MCO a couple days later. Yes, it's different airports, but even if I had flown in and out of the same one up north, it still would have been $150 more on either carrier at either airport.

It's a little odd that two one-way fares on the same airline are cheaper than one round-trip, but did you know you can (usually) book the two one-way flights on the given airlines' websites and save whatever service fee the online travel sites are charging?
