Two on jet ski almost run over by Carnival Magic at PC

I would bet most of those jet skis around PC are rentals meaning most on there aren't very familiar with the rules, and they don't have radios.

Bet your right. I know they don't have radios onboard, and I doubt anyone would even remember to tell them there are security zones around the ships.

Got me. I think and I cant swear to it, that the SO boats were formally the Ports PD boats. If I'm not mistaken, Port Canaveral had its own PD,K9 and marine teams. They were all disbanded and turned over to BCSO if I'm not mistaken.

I agree with the why bother. It makes no sense to me. But then again having worked at JFK, the 1 thing I learned is that if someone wants to do something or get something past security, they will find away.

And this obviously didn't happen in this case, but what better way to distract the one escort boat, while bad guy does something. Maybe I watch too much NCIS or read too many spy thriller books, but wow this seems like light security.

I assume cruise ships have radar to pick up other boats at sea? Not sure how effective it is with smaller craft. Then again maybe with how much we cruise I should just not think about it.

Does anyone know how close the nearest USCG station is to PC? Wondering how quickly the coast guard could get there if you did have one of those serious incidents. I know the nearest US Navy base is Jacksonville, but they could get at least get air assets down there quickly. For that matter I think Patrick AFB is right there near Canaveral.

They have an active sub base there, not sure what type of assets they have stationed there.

The closest CG station is in Port Canaveral. When you are onboard any of the DCL ships, look off the port side. Youll usually see a few tugs tied up across from the Carnival piers, and the CG station is next to it.

Patrick primarily deals with space related missions. They have a few helicopters amd C130s, but I think they are more for rescue then anything else. On the opposite coast, in St Petersburg is MacDil AFB which is also home to Central Command and USCG air.

And this obviously didn't happen in this case, but what better way to distract the one escort boat, while bad guy does something. Maybe I watch too much NCIS or read too many spy thriller books, but wow this seems like light security.

Cruise ships have multiple radars. Theres at least 1 set on the bow, and multiple radars on the masts over the bridge. When ships are maneuvering in channels and ports, they also have doors on both sides of the bow that open where officers stand with radios watching for anything that might slip by the radar or missed by the bridge.

PC has 2 210 cutters, the Vigilant and Confidence and a 87 foot patrol boat. I know they have at least 1 smaller boat.
They could call the CG for help. All depends on the situation.

Its entirely possible that the CG boat was using a handline to convince a jet ski to be somewhere else.

I don't think too many cruise ships have a layered defense so to speak unless they came from an area that required them. Once they close the doors, the only way on is over the rails. I'll have to look next time and see if anything jumps out as far as defense

My point was despite the rules of who gets right of way, if something that much bigger than you is coming at you, just let it go and get out of the way. Certainly don't dart around it to check it out, play chicken, etc. So I shouldn't have said "they have the right of way, period" but more like "they might as well have the right of way" especially if you are in a small pleasure craft, jet skis included.

I agree, when I'm out getting my 30 miles everyday on my road bike and look like I could have a collision with a semi, I stand down. I don't care which of us have the right of way, I'm letting him go through.

It was kind of tongue in cheek, about the Pirates in the Carribean.

The true main issue is that the lines protect themselves and really don't have too much in the way of protection. The Harbor patrol in theory should be doing the escort work to keep people away but it's way too easy for someone to do harm. I used to work for Virgin Atlantic Cargo at JFK. with all of the security around the president and his plane yould think it would be a hard target. My dad worked at Kennedy on occasion doing construction. He was working on the Port Authority police station on the ramp. His crew was told to stay off the roof between certain times because there safety could.not be guaranteed they wouldn't be shot. Long story short, they parked AF 1 at the Pan American bldgs in the cargo area. The wing tips hung over the fence and any drunk nut could have taken the plane out by driving thru the fence. The parking lot was never closed next to where AF1 was parked.

There was an interesting program on recently that was discussing cruise ships as terrorist targets, and it was saying that SEAL Team 6 is trained to handle cruise ship hostage type takeovers and could deploy anywhere in the world within hours. It was interesting, they were talking about some of the procedures and tactics involved and basically they can get on board before anyone knows they are they if they had to.

to close a couple of questions

there is NOT an 'active sub base' at PC, nor has there ever been. PC is home to the 'missile test range' and for this reason the NAVY built a pier for their ships when they come here for testing. Hence the 'Trident Pier' at PC ..... built to support testing of the Trident Missile system used by US and several allies.

USCG has a "boat station" in Port Canaveral .... the boat station is responsible for the local area and does this with a few small boats, which are not intended to stay out over night. Station Canaveral is also home for a 'patrol boat' ... approx 90 foot in length these can/will stay out for a week; a PB usually stay close to their home port ast they are 'attached' to the local area. ...... Port Canav is also HOME to two 'Medium Endurance Cutters' ... these guys stay out for 2 months at a time (or more) ...... I served on several and Captained a couple. An MEC does not patrol the local area .... We were usually down south for immigration/migrant or drugs ..... in one of the choke points ......
