Two on jet ski almost run over by Carnival Magic at PC

As part of routine man overboard drills we'd drop "oscar" a man sized/shaped dummy with a life vest over the side and NEVER ONCE was he sucked into the screws .

Very interesting.

Sinking a 50 foot long sail boat made of mahogany {typical Haitian sailboat}

Am dying at the thought of sinking a mahogany boat. Can't you bring it back so I can have it? :)

There was another video from one of the local stations that showed the aftermath so to speak and it sounds like the jet ski just bumped down the side of the Magic. From the same video, it looked like the SO boat and pilot boat were both waiting on the Magic to clear the area to recover it. We have 2 skis that are very similar to the one in the video and they are incredibly buoyant, even upside down and or full of water. It takes a little know how and weight in the right spots to reflip an upside down ski. Ask me how I know.

As far as what happened to the kids or the ski, since on the surface it looks like a combination of bad luck and coincidence, probably nothing. The ds might go to the vendor and check paperwork and a cursory investigation but it probably ended there.

Btw, is anyone else having issues with the board hanging up while trying to type? Been having that problem both on my phone and laptop the last couple of days.

That's true, jet skis are pretty buoyant. I would think colliding with the hull of the Magic could damage the hull integrity of the jet ski though, I think they are just fiberglass.

How do you know about reflipping a jet ski?

Yes, I have been having the same typing issues. Not at present, but have on many occasions.

Skis are pretty strong and can take a beating before showing damage. Especially the newer ones. The newer ones, and it looked like the one at the port the other day was a newer one, are built to run 75 mph, fish off of, and I know of first hand accounts of people that have run them from Fl to Bimini Bahamas.

We rolled ours on several occasions. Ok I rolled ours on several occasions. (most of the time deliberately. Lot of fun when its 100 out) ) Theres a trick to it but you have to know the trick. Usually involves grabbing a hold of the intake or the far side of the ski. You need a little bit of weight to get it moving but once it does itll come right over. My son learned a valuable lesson about using the kill switch when he rolled one one day. He forgot to hook it up when it rolled and it was still running up side down.

Ive been having typing issues on and off. Today seems every other post.

I just looked out of curiosity. I think theres 1 behind Terminal 10 to rent a jet ski.

So it's possible this ski could have made it through the ordeal unscathed? Much to those girls' delight I'm sure.

When you say rolled, are you talking about a kayak like maneuver while on one?

Something like that. If you do it right, you can plant the nose of a ski while turning the back will come up and youll pivot on the nose. If you do it right. A little miscalculation, and either 1 or more people are going airborne or the ski will roll over up side down. Ive done both. Some time deliberately, sometimes by accident. The other way to do it is if someone tries climbing over the side, that will throw the balance off and could cause a ski to roll over. To get on one, you really need to get on from the back in the open water. Unless you really want to roll it. Judging from the initial video, one of the girls fell off, and when she tried getting back on, she tried getting on from the side, her friend leaned over to help and that was all the ski need to dump both and roll over.

Tragedy averted

My first thought is.. very lucky kids

Second thought is... not making me feel too confident that the channel is so easily (overtaken) by a jet ski or Anyone who actually could have wanted to do harm to a cruise ship to get that close.
Crazy on all fronts, imho.

Do Coast Guard boat escorts have water cannons aboard.

I swear we saw the CG boat blasting wave runners away from a cruise ship in Miami channel with water blasters.

I always thought the gun on the front was a ballistic weapon. lol.
Couldn't see specifically where the water blaster came from. In fact, it may have come the the cruise ship itself. ? ? ? We ended up in a blind spot regarding source of water cannon.
It was definitely a water cannon.

It was odd. But it did lead to the watercraft moving away from the large cruise ship.
So a success.

Anyone else seen this?

More ports should employ this tactic. IMO

Most CG boats have at least hoses on board, usually attached to a portable pump. Some boats did have monitors on the bow of the boat prepiped. I'm not sure if the newer model boats have a prepied waterway, since most ports have active fireboats now. Havent really looked. Most of the fireboats, such as Miami, are the same boats that the CG uses only set up differently. Pretty much the same hulls and decks, just different interiors and layouts.

altho this made for some drama and interesting video

Does make me wonder about the value of the 'escort vessel' supposedly providing a security function for the cruise ship exiting the port.

The Value is he saved 2 lives........ I think that is one hell of a value.

I learned to sail in San Diego bay. There are many rules of the "road" for who has right of way based on position and course, but what I've always remembered was the Big Gray Boat (navy vessel) rule. They have right of way, period, so stay the heck away from them. Because, as mentioned, they can't turn on a dime or stop. Obviously, the rule applies to whatever color the really big ship is.

Glad the girls are safe, but they shouldn't have been anywhere near a large vessel, wind or not.

Believe it or not, a large ship under certain circumstances will be the give way vessel to smaller vessels. There was a recent post on a boating forum Im on, where a ferry boat in Washington or Oregon or somewhere like that hit a pleasure boat. When we looked at the actual rules of the road, because of where the boats where, and which direction the pleasure boat was coming from, the pleasure boat actually had he right of way and the ferry should have stood down or altered course. Same thing with cruise ships. Under certain circumstances, they are give way vessels to other vessels. Even smaller boats. Do they always do that? No. Hence the collision. In the channel the cruise ship had the right of way because of its restricted ability to maneuver. Had they been out of the channel, in open water, believe it or not, the jet ski would have had the right of way coming from stbd to port.

To what a couple have commented, is there a procedure, especially in a channel like that to keep a terrorist from using a jet ski or small boat to put something on the waterline of a ship? Surprised everyone's favorite lawyer hasn't pounced on this opportunity to repost his terrorist concerns for cruise lines.

My point was despite the rules of who gets right of way, if something that much bigger than you is coming at you, just let it go and get out of the way. Certainly don't dart around it to check it out, play chicken, etc. So I shouldn't have said "they have the right of way, period" but more like "they might as well have the right of way" especially if you are in a small pleasure craft, jet skis included.

In theory that's what the escort boat is for. But it goes back to what is 1 person going to do if someone was determined to harm a ship. There is a mandatory distance to keep from cruise ships in the channel. I forget what it is off hand but I think it's between 100 and 300 feet.

The problem is if you make a wrong move you've made things worse. Especially if you turn into the path of the bigger vessel thts turning to avoid you. The only sure way to avoid an issue is radio communication with the vessel your looking at that is the give way. This way there is no misinterpretation of who's going where. Theres a actually several steps that any one can be used to signal intentions.

I would bet most of those jet skis around PC are rentals meaning most on there aren't very familiar with the rules, and they don't have radios.

OMG .. so WHY buy the boat and pay the ONE person on board if you KNOW it will be ineffective?????? It costs less to wave a flag that says 'bad people ... go away'
