I know we have a couple maritime people here so I was wondering if these girls would have been run over, would that have affected the ships departure? Would they have had to close the channel for a period of time after that? Or would the Magic just have kept on going? Just wondering what the protocol requirements are for such incidents.
Worst case scenario, more then likely the ship would have been delayed for any number of reasons. Anytime theres an incident that involves a ships, the CG will gets involved. To what degree all depends on the situation. (for example, the Celebrity Summit that got near the guys dock in FtL. CG looked, saw the ship was under positive control the whole time, never contacted the bottom, and was always in the channel, case closed with in minutes) At worst, the bridge crew will all get drug tested, interviewed, and the ships data logs will get pulled. This will paint a picture of who said what, when, where, how, and what the ship was doing, where it was, speed, location in the channel etc. All of this will be going on while whoever does recoveries for Brevard County searches. In that theres 2 choices. 1st, depending on time of day, boats with side scan sonar will look. If they find anything of interest, it gets gps marked, and a dive team will enter the water. Option 2, is the wait and see what pops up and where. It all varies by agency, time of day, location, whos in charge and in what mood, time of year.............They may also do a cursory exam of the ship, as there are any number of protrusions and intakes on a ship that could catch an object on the way by.
Assuming in this case, the ship actually strikes and sinks the jet ski for example, and theres suspected damage, the ship reports it to the CG and the CG team and the ships engineers will give the ship a once over, and a determination will be made as to whether the ship can continue, or it would need to stay in port, or if divers need to meet the ship at her next stop.
Realistically, theres no real clear cut answer as every situation is different and each response will be different.
In this case, the spotters on the Magic had already seen what happened, and notified the bridge. What isn't told in most news stories, is the harbor pilot and the Capt , already had the bow moving away from the accident. The bow was moving to stbd on the way out, to pass the ski, on her port side which also had the effect of both moving the ship away, and also letting the wind push the ski away from the ship. The pilot boat which was leading the way, had also turned and was coming back to assist also. I'm not taking away from the Deputy, because he did an outstanding job by himself.
The bigger question is, why are the deputies on the boats by themselves. In any different situation, things could have gone much worse. For example. What would have happened if the ds got pulled over the side due to conditions?
