Two first timers take on free dining...was it a success? 13-27 Sept 2011- Complete...

Thanks for the review of Akershus! :thumbsup2 I have not been there since it was turned into a character meal. Part of me is nervous to because I loved it when it was the original buffet. But I may have to give it a shot.

Thanks for the review - Akershus was one of the few places we ate at our last trip so we're looking forward to trying it again! BTW, I'm reading a book right now & it mentioned a street lined with halal butchers & it instantly made me think of you two as I had never heard of that before reading your review! Thanks for broadening my horizons :thumbsup2

Karamelle Kuche looks soooo yummy!!! Everytime we go we somehow miss it, but that is NOT happening next time!!!!!!

Akershus is another we haven't tried, but I'm not so sure I would like the food there. :confused3 The princesses would definitely have to make the meal for me!! :thumbsup2

What a lovely update. The catch of the day looks delicious! I have never given Akershus a thought because I thought it was mostly meat. I only eat fish in the meat department and my mother, my Disney partner in crime, is a total vegatarian. But it looks like they have quite a selection. I'll have to give the menu a more thorough look.

I fell in love with the caramel popcorn...I bought 3 bags total and brought 2 home with me! One of my young ladies at work is a Werther's fiend so I brought her a bag!

We love Akershus for breakfast, have done dinner but we enjoyed the breakfast potato casserole so much we chose it over dinner all the time :lmao:

I soo regret not getting my hands on that caramel popcorn especially as I knew about how yummy it was thanks to these boards. Next time KK will be my first stop and I'll go when I have all my snack credits intact so I don't feel guilty about spending more than one :rolleyes1

Ooh in that case I'll have to fit in breakfast on a future trip! :thumbsup2

No worries Danielle! :goodvibes I hope you get to try it one day as it was great and a fun way to meet the princesses. However, it may not compare to your meals at CRT!

No worries! It was my favourite - not sure Zaheer shares this opinion! Aaw thank you for thinking of us Brandy and I'm glad my reviews helped with your understanding of halal meat :thumbsup2

It was, it was, it was!!!! :rotfl: I hope you definitely try it next time!!! You have to!!! I can't wait to go back and blow all my snack credits at this place!!

The food was good for us just because of the fish/vegetarian options available. Though I have to agree meeting the Princesses is the main appeal :thumbsup2

Aaw thank you :goodvibes It was - I am so glad our server recommended it to me as am not sure I would've ordered it otherwise. If you are not a meat lover I can definitely recommend Akershus. The starter buffet is mostly all fish/vegetarian food. They do have a couple of meat options on the main menu but they have plenty of fish/vegetarian options as well. I hope you get to try it one day.

Akershus... a restaurant that I have still not been to! The food looks really really yummy. I must get myself there next trip!

Tanz, glad that you enjoyed Akershus. We went in 2007 for lunch (Mark insisted as we were celebrating my 50th birthday and beating breast cancer and thought I should meet the princesses). Unfortunately, our lunch was not very good. But your dinner looks absolutely yummy.

I see you made your ADR :thumbsup2

Again, I want strawberry shortcake....NOW!:cloud9:

We ate at Akershus in Jan, we had breakfast and it was very yummy!

Found your Dining review today and read the whole thing (skimming most of the comments to catch up quick). Looks like you had some great meals and more to come, can't wait to hear about the rest of your trip.

I have been wanting to try Boma, I know I would love that Jungle Juice and I was pleasantly surprised that it is available at dinner, I thought it was only breakfast.

I am another huge fan of that Sunshine Seasons Strawberry Shortcake. I had seen a pic of it in the Food pics thread before my trip in 2010 and it was my goal to have it, then when I went back this past May, I really wanted to try something else but I couldn't resist, so I had it again! :)

I hope you get to try it one day Wendy as we really enjoyed our meal here - the food sure was yummy!

Thanks Kathy! Aaw I'm sorry to hear you had a bad experience here especially at a time when you needed to have that little bit of Disney magic. Our dinner was yummy and we would return again - well I would anyway! I think having a really cute server helped as well :rolleyes1

I see you made your ADR :thumbsup2

Lol yes we did! I'm actually a bit ahead on the dining reviews so the meal I was referring to was actually Chefs de France.

I agree with you...so want one NOW!

You're the second person to say breakfast was very yummy! I may check it out next time on the basis that our server Kristian is there in the mornings as well! :lmao:

Aaw :welcome: and thank you for taking the time to read the whole thing from start to finish. I actually have links on the first page to each post. We had some great meals and you are right in that we have many more to come.

I hope you get to try Boma one day and yes the jungle juice is available at dinner as well - it was SO yummy! :thumbsup2

Lol yes I was the same - the second time we went to Sunshine Seasons the thought of trying something else entered my mind for a second but then sense prevailed and I went with the yummy Strawberry Shortcake!

I see you have been in May for the last couple of years. I'm going to try and read your May 2011 TR as I am thinking of going back May next year.

We also ate at Akershus! Our dinner was quite good too. The desserts were just okay though, quite frankly I don't think you were missing all that much by having the sorbet instead!

Love Zaheer's response to if he would go back to Akershus!

I wasn't a big fan of Akershus when we had lunch there a few years ago. Seeing the Princesses was great, and I'm glad we had that experience for our DDs, but none of us were too thrilled with the food.

And yes, you must try the caramel corn... it was very, very good!

Catching up on your reviews now - I have a slight craving for some Scandinavian food now! Both seafood dishes at Akershus look great. :goodvibes

Looking forward to the rest of your reviews!

You will definitely have to come back to Karamell Kuche so you can try the popcorn!!!!

Zaheer: Not sure. 'The food was good but you only booked this so you could see the Princesses. I would rather have returned to Boma.'

:rotfl2::rotfl::lmao:

The food at Akershus actually looks good! I will have to try it sometime.

What a lovely meal at Akershus. It's a place we've never been to.... having a boy keeps us from there. I so want to try either CRT/Akershus, I was tempted to drag DS there past trip but I refrained. :rolleyes1

Both your Cod and Salmon looks great!

I'm glad you enjoyed your dinner here as well. Your take on the desserts makes me feel better about having the sorbet. I felt like I was missing out but obviously wasn't!

That had me smiling a bit as well though I didn't want to show it! It just means he'll probably pay better attention when I mention dining choices in the future!

Aaw I'm sorry to hear that the lunch wasn't great food wise. I think the main draw is the Princesses and if the food is yummy then that's an added bonus. We were debating between lunch and dinner so am glad we chose dinner.

I soo regret not trying that - had I been on my own I would've just got a pack but obviously sensible Zaheer had to talk me out of it! :rolleyes1

Looking forward to the rest of your reviews!

Thanks for catching up - have been doing the same with your reviews. Lol at having a slight craving for some Scandinavian food! I felt the same over your club level offerings! Thanks - the seafood dishes were great and a nice change from having meat.

Hope to post more soon :goodvibes

You will definitely have to come back to Karamell Kuche so you can try the popcorn!!!!

:rotfl2::rotfl::lmao:

The food at Akershus actually looks good! I will have to try it sometime.

My next trip is going to be based around Karamelle Kuche and the popcorn!!! :lmao:

Lol yes that comment left me laughing on the inside but I tried to hide it as it would have made Zaheer's head even bigger then it is! :rotfl2:

I really enjoyed it and I think secretly Zaheer did as well. Hope you get to try it one day.

Thanks. I can imagine it is a hard place to book when you have boys in the family. That was nice of you to refrain for DS' birthday. You may have to try and fit it in on the group trip that is coming up for you.

The cod and Salmon were great though we are both in agreement that the cod won out of the two of them.

Today was our 'taking it easy' day and we had booked a late breakfast reservation at 1900 Park Fare. For some reason I had it in my head that the ADR was for 9.45am. We took the bus to Epcot as for some reason I forgot about having to change at TTC and it taking longer than the MK monorail! Therefore I thought we were actually going to be late. Luckily though when we got there I found out that our reservation was for 10.45am so we had actually arrived early for a change!

We arrived and had our picture taken - we didn't buy it. We got seated and our server came to greet us. Another place where I do not remember the name - sorry. She filled our glasses with the juice which was very yummy. I also asked for some coffee and Zaheer asked for tea. He loved getting the Twinings box each time and being able to choose a different type of tea.

We asked for the chef and was secretly hoping chef TJ would be working as have heard how excellent he is. Unfortunately he wasn't working today and the chef that came to see us was okay but just mentioned there were plenty of options. He didn't walk us through the buffet like some of the other restaurants had. We didn't mind so much as there were plenty of choices from the buffet and we knew we would be able to order a customised omelette at that station.

We went to get our food and had to wait a bit for our omelettes. I kept glancing at our table and was a bit worried that I would miss the characters.

Zaheer got Mickey waffles, french toast, scrambled eggs and a vegetable made to order omelette.

528-1.jpg

He enjoyed all the food and you can see the tea choices in the corner of the pic. The one thing that I did notice was that the table was tiny and it was a bit difficult to place all our plates and cups/glasses on it.

I had the Mickey waffles in syrup (yummy!!), a slice of french toast (was okay), scrambled eggs (were nice but don't know why I got them when I had ordered a vegetable omelette as well) and a bagel with salmon in it. This is the only piece of food that I found was a bit meh - I couldn't care much for it. However the rest of the food was great.

530-1.jpg

We came back and Pooh was first to stop by our table. He was great.

533-1.jpg

Next was Tigger.

535-1.jpg

After we had eaten our food our server bought out our Cinderella Slipper Dessert. I had ordered this beforehand and have to say it was very yummy! It was a bit rich but I enjoyed it. It did mean I didn't get any desserts from the buffet though.

544-1.jpg

Zaheer, however got some fruit with the strawberry soup. I tried some of the soup and have to say I didn't like it at all. I know it is highly rated on these boards but it just wasn't my cup of tea.

That evening we went to Epcot to watch Illuminations. I wanted to eat in China (Lotus Blossom Cafe) and Zaheer wanted to eat at Tangierine Cafe. He asked me to try it and if I didn't like it I could get something else. So off we went to Morocco and we ordered the vegetable platter which contained falafel, couscous salad, hummus, tabouleh, lentil salad and olives.

DSCF1444-1.jpg

I took one bite of the falafel and didn't like it. I also tried the couscous and again didn't like it. I knew I wasn't going to enjoy it as it wasn't the type of food I like however I had given it a chance. I thought about what I could eat. I wasn't in the mood to walk to China at this point so decided I would use a snack credit to get a side of chips. I left Zaheer to enjoy his meal and walked to the UK to get some chips. I loved being served by someone with a UK accent - felt like I was back home and at my local chippie!

I made sure I put loads of ketchup on my chips and munched on them on the way back to France (where we had agreed to meet up again).

Sorry Zaheer had the camera so I have no photo of the chips but I have to say they were very yummy and kept me going for the evening.

I will instead share this pic of Morocco Zaheer took before he left the area. I love how pretty Morocco looked at night time.

Review of today:

1900 Park Fare

Food A- Apart from the salmon bagel enjoyed all the food. I didn't care much for the strawberry soup but Zaheer enjoyed it.
Service - B+ Our server was good and kept our juice glasses topped. However, it was a buffet so not much service was required.
Atmosphere A. The characters were great and interacted with us well.
Would we return? One day but only after trying some other places first. It wouldn't be one we would do on every trip.

Tangierine Cafe - Zaheer - A+ Loved the food and having something different from a CS place.
Me - Would give it a really low grade. I didn't like it at all and wouldn't return any time soon. This is just my opinion and I know some people love this type of food.
I'm just not one of them.

Yorkshire County Fish and Chip Shop - A+ I can only comment on the chips and loved them! Although I can have them at home any day it was nice to be able to choose that as an option at Disney World. I would probably return here and get some fish as well next time.

Akershus was one of my favorite restaurants in 2010 when we went for super. But then in 2011 we went back for breakfast but did not enjoy it so much. Glad you guys had a great time. :thumbsup2

In 2009 we ate at 1900 Parkfare and I remember LOVING the breakfast over there. Better than Crystal Palace in my opinion but I hear a lot of mixed reviews now so I do not know if things have changed.... That cinderella slipper dessert looks AMAZING! :lovestruc It brings water to my mouth. Hmmmm

I am with Zaheer. Tangerina Cafe is one of my favorite counter services at Epcot and you are right the Moroccan pavillon is so beautiful!

I am glad you got to have a taste from home at the UK pavillon. It is one of my favorite pavillons for shopping BTW. ;) EVERY YEAR we say we are going to have some fish & chips but something happens and we never do it. :(

Can't wait to read more.

Q

1900 Park Fare looked great. That desert with the slipper looks amazing. Did that come as part of the buffet or was it extra? I love the happy anniversary touch :) I didn't realize that the Pooh characters were there too. They're among my favorites!

I'm so excited that I leave in 3.5 days! I'm taking notes of all the great food you guys ate.

Great update hon! I love breakfast buffets! I am one of those people that love the strawberry soup but I totally agree with you when it comes to falafels  just the thought of them makes me gag....sorry if that's too much information:lmao: After seeing that great shot of the tea, I'm going to go make myself one!!!
