Two curse words in the previews before "Cars" which is a rated G movie. Anyone else?

MPAA ratings are governed by what is currently socially acceptable, not by what some religions deem acceptable.

I don't even think religion had anything to do with this thread...:rolleyes1

I remember growing up we got in trouble for saying fart. We had to say "pass gas." :rolleyes2 My parents got mad if we said shut up as well. Oh well, we still said it, just not when they were around ;)

I will tell you though that none of my children will EVER have, or shoot a BB gun. EVER. :sad2:

Oh, I agree! We plan on skipping the BBs and going straight to the real deal! ::yes:: I don't EVER wanna have to clean cow manure off my kids for following in their father's and father's cousins' footsteps shooting fresh patties with their BB guns to splatter each other. That's just gross. ;):teeth:

Thankfully DH and his cousins never lost any eyes shooting each other in their BB gun wars (such nice little pacifist Mennonites that they were :p). They handled their real guns appropriately, but they were foolish with their BB guns at times. Me, now, I've never, EVER touched a BB gun, and never touched/fired a real gun until I was 17 or 18. I just put rocks in snowballs that I then turned to iceballs... Thankfully none of my sibs lost an eye in any of our, uh, "snowball" fights...

YMMV. ;)

I had to sit through Larry the Cable Guy to see Cars. There was far more swearing coming from me than from any Flicka preview.

shot that will put an eye out or maybe worse.

With your serious post--distracted by your user name--and a popular Peter Billingsly movie--this just has me :rotfl2: .

Carry on now. My apologies for this nostalgiac (sp?) interruption.

We saw Cars last night and there was a preview for Flicka here as well.

Just for the record, my husband and I did both notice the "damn" (everything just seems so loud and emphasized at the movies, LOL). It didn't get me exactly upset but I did think it was just so, well...unnecessary. Can't they just show a clip with NO iffy words in it just to spare the littlest of the little ones in the theatre? Was that word really essential??

At least it is not as bad as the the "Pay Per View" movies we sometimes buy from satellite...on the weekend we ordered "Hoodwinked" and just before it started we were treated to a preview for "Hostel" and some other stupid thing as well. Had to cover my boys' eyes and ears until it was safe. :sad2:

If you read the disclaimer before each preview it will say "The following preiview has been approved for all audiences." So, I don't think the word damn said twice in a movie would give it a PG rating.

:sad2:

That is exactly how I feel about it. Like I said in my post #52, "Flicka" is surely a 1 1/2 to 2 hour movie. Why not show the footage from the part of the film without the language.

Why do some people think damn and hell are a bad word? Really? I mean when I was a kid, we could ask about heaven and hell all we wanted, but we could never say "oh to hell with it" if we were mad about something. :confused3

I guess that is where the "curse" comes from?

I don't let my kids say those words, but they certainly hear them, probably mainly from ME. But they know there are adult words that they can't say. The reason I don't let my kids say them? I don't know, maybe because I was never allowed, and it does seem weird hearing a little kid say those words, but all in all, they are harmless, don't you think? I mean hell is a place. And IMO, damn is not a swear unless you have God in front of it.

You don't? What would be the reason for non-christians objecting to the words hell or damn?

Which just happens to be the way it seems to be censored these days by the those in charge. When watching TV these days every damn is there and every {profanity removed by mods} is bleeped.

Just watched the preview again and the use seems totally appropraiae given the context. Seems like they chose two scenes because they help define the movie.

If you are bothered by them maybe they are doing you a favor and letting you know this movie isn't for you. Personally I can't see skipping what looks to be a wonderful family movie because of a couple low level four letter words.

BTW, hell and damn are in the Bible -- hardly a bastion of immorality.

It's not a bastion of immorality, but it's chock full of violence, adultery, and other forms of immorality and adult content that people might not want their little kids to read about or see :scared:. But it's all an integral part of the story ::yes::.

Okay - back to the topic at hand, which I have no comment on since I don't have kids :).

No they were not doing me a favor by giving those segments of the film to me at a rated G movie preview. I am well aware that most PG movies contain some questionable language/curse words. Before I bring my children to any rated PG movie I research it. I read up on the content, question those that have seen it, etc. I have never done that for a Disney rated G movie or the previews shown at those movies before. I didn't think it was necessary. I realize now that I am wrong. I do not bring my children to rated PG movies with such language. We have the TV Guardian at our home. If DH and I think the movie is appropriate for our children without those words/language, then we rent it and watch it with the TV Guardian. That way the children will get the story without the words. I know that we will not see "Flicka" in theaters. We may be able to rent it, though, and avoid the words. We will see later what reviews say.

You could also show up just in time for the movie and skip the previews. Given your post above it seems to be the only safe plan. Really.

I am curious however. How is it that the many adult references in Cars were OK but damn is not? There were all kinds of bathroom jokes and sexual references within the movie. Most of them coming from Mater. What's the difference between a kid hearing damn and a kid asking why Lightning would be checking out the girl cars rear end?

Just asking because I simply don't get it. In fact I would have given Cars a PG.

I don't know what the HECK I was thinking of when I chose this user name to be honest with you! Having to do over, I would come up with something much more clever. :sunny:

I completely agree with you. I, too, would have given it a PG rating. I think that the innuendoes in the movie were just as bad as the words. I don't think that they were ok. As I said earlier, I didn't really check out the movie before we went. I have never thought it was necessary to do so because of the G rating. Again, I admit that was a mistake on my part and it will not happen again. Silly, naive me thought that the innuendoes were considered "subjective" so therefore wouldn't be easy to explain to MPAA or others. I thought that they would be considered "a grey area." I thought that the words were different. I thought that they were clearly a standard, line drawn kind of issue........you know? Honestly, I thought that most parents expected G movies to be free from words like that. I swear, honestly, I thought that others would be just as shocked as me. Call me naive, I know, I had no idea that I would be out of the norm here. I thought most parents brought their little ones to the theater, to rated G movies, expecting there to be no questionable comments or language. I expect it in PG.

Not that it matters, really, but I do know Hoodwinked is rated PG.

To me an unacceptable word is one I don't want my 5 year old repeating. I censor my own language around them, I like to think that a G rated movie would do the same (and the previews.) I agree, why not just have another part of the movie in the preview? Is it really necessary? No it isn't.

Just because standards are lower then they were when we were kids, doesn't make it right. We shouldn't accept things like that, just because "everybody else does." Why not hold ourselves to higher standards. I agree, if you don't like it,complain. Phone calls and emails aren't that hard. Only when people stand up and say "I don't like that" will they make changes. At the rate things are going, I don't even want to think about what will be in G rated movies when I have grandkids. :sad2:

And I think making comments on the bb gun are low shots and are just ment to say "I am a better parent then you." This wasn't part of that topic. If needed, start a new thread about such topics. I know the initial question was "how do you feel about this", and I understand that connection, but people saying "You wouldn't catch my kids shooting one" is rather high and mighty.
