Apparently two young teenage boys were arrested today at my DD's school for trying to setup what the media is referring to as a "Middle School Mafia". Here is the text from the newspaper article. Pay particular attention to the fact that they even had someone in charge of "candy sales". What is this world coming to???

Two accused of planning middle school 'mafia'

03/25/03

Northfield Center Township - Two juveniles were arrested by the Summit County Sheriff's Department after an investigation into what was described as a "mafia-type organization" at the Nordonia Hills Middle School.

Capt. Larry Momchilov of the sheriff's department said police were called to the school after papers were discovered there detailing a proposed network that included references to taking over the school, fixing grades and transferring money into bank accounts by computer hacking.

An organizational chart detailed jobs within the organization, including those who were responsible for weapons, protection, money laundering, candy sales and hit men. Momchilov said 13 boys ages 14 and 15 were involved in the group, which was in the early stages of being established.

He said no injuries resulted from the group and no weapons were recovered, although police did confiscate hand-made plug-in devices that could possibly cause electrical problems at the school.

Momchilov said the top two organizers of the group were arrested and will be charged in Summit County Juvenile Court with inducing panic and criminal mischief. Officials from the Nordonia Hills School District could not be reached for comment.

TC, I saw that on the news. I'm glad that they were arrested. Perhaps they'll get a real good scare from this and prevent others from doing anything so stupid.

I am truly in shock after reading that, John. Truly amazing and very sad :(

Very scary that your DD has to be exposed to those kinds of kids so young.

I heard that on that radio on my way home from work. When I went to pick up my son at elementary school, I told the psychologist about it.
She did not believe me! She just said, "Right".

Hope she sees it on the news tonight!

P.S. When I heard that, I thought where are these kids parents?

I grew up in Summit County (Price, Sill, CFHS) and can't believe schools have become so bad. If we ever adopt a child, he/she will be going to private school no matter how hard I have to work.

I don't think that's a safety haven anymore.

TC, is your middle school 6th-8th? I'm confused as to why they have 14 and 15 year olds.

Middle School is 7th and 8th grade. I guess that the 15yo students might have been held back a year.

And they say middle schoolers are unproductive! As scary as it is I'm not suprised.

I don't even know what to say except teachers are NOT paid enough to have to deal with this kind of stuff.

Everything that goes on in public schools also happens in private schools.

Awful.

I'm curious about where do people think kids get these ideas?

"Where are the parents?"

Unfortunately, from what I've seen of many (not all) troubled youths in the schools where I've subbed, these children have parents who really don't care. They see their children as burdens and wishing they didn't have to deal with it. They should not have had children in the first place. (IMO)

This is not entirely true.

"Everything" is a big word. One of the things about the really good private schools is that most students work extremely hard to get into them and they care about their success and grades. Sure there are problems, but again it's a caring thing.

Or they could go to a public school like my daughter.

It is well known that you had better not go crazy and start shooting because they will shoot back.

What a story. I am speechless and I thought there was nothing that could surprise me anymore.

I agree everything is a stong word.

Students work very hard to get into good public and private schools. There are students in both settings that care about their education. However, things like drugs, fighting, sex... occur in both public and private schools.
