Twins? who's got them?

I have "virtual" twins that are 5 years old. They are 10 weeks apart in age by birth but adopted together, so very like twins.

I also have what some call "Irish" twins, children born less than 16 months apart. My youngest daughter was born 3 days before my youngest son's 1st birthday (362 days apart).

For the short time I had only one baby (YDS), I envied people who had one baby at a time. It was so easy! ;)

Haha! You sound like us! I have one set of "irish twins" and one set of twins. :) My first two are 14 mo apart. Second two are 2 min apart. Had all 4 in 5 years (Looks like you did too!) It was crazy...but super fun.

Me too!!!! I had four kids in 4 years. Crazy, but fun.
I don't really remember what it was like with just one

Ho hum, here we are at 38 weeks with nothing happening!! :scared1:

Never thought I'd be sitting here on Father's Day still pregnant. But alas, there's nothing going on. I've been dilated 3cm for the past month and according to my stress tests and ultrasounds, the babies are doing just fine in there so here we are, sitting & waiting.

I'm completely miserable. I can hardly move, everything hurts so much.

The doctors said that since the babies are tolerating everything so well, they don't want to induce until 39 weeks.

Congrats on your little ones! I am already starting to have a hard time moving around at 20 weeks, so I cannot even begin to imagine what this will be like at the end. Great news that your babies are doing well & both head down...hoping for the same here!

I do have to admit that I'm a little surprised that your dr is letting you go to 39 weeks. I interviewed 2 doctors when we found out that we were having twins & both said their policy is to induce at 37 weeks due to the safety of the babies. :confused3

Just wanted to say hello to all the other twin parents out there. We have a 3 yr old girl & expecting twin boys in October. We are super excited, nervous & overwhelmed by all the changes. We are in the midst of minivan shopping & house shopping. Neither of our vehicles fit 3 carseats in the backseat:eek:

I had some problems in the beginning so my doctor told me to take things easy, although he didn't put me on bedrest. He has forewarned me that he will put me on automatic bedrest at 24 weeks, to prevent being admitted into a hospital for bedrest. He said that is just his experience to get Twins closer to 37 weeks. Whatever works!

Its already in the 90's with lots of humidity here. Looks like one long hot summer!

What kind of twins are you having? I learned that the type of twins makes a huge difference. We're having di/di twins and they pose the least risk of all twin pregnancies. It's basically just like having 2 singleton pregnancies... they just happen to occur at the same time.

We do weekly stress tests to make sure they're still handling the pregnancy well & they pass with flying colors... they're typically done within the first 5 minutes of starting the test. I also had frequent ultrasounds (though not as frequently as other, higher risk twin pregnancies) to make sure they were growing adequately and they look great. At 35 weeks, they were both pushing 6lb.

I also think it helps that I'm healthy & have had a complication-free pregnancy in the past. Low BP, no diabetes, healthy weight, a previous pregnancy that went to 40 weeks and was delivered with no complications... it all puts me in a better position to carry this pregnancy to a healthy date.

We talked about induction and all that a few weeks ago and the OBs at my practice all agree that they see benefits to keeping babies in up to 39 weeks. Every week you can keep the inside, they get bigger & healthier but 39 weeks is kind of the point of diminishing returns. They don't see enough benefit in terms of growth of the babies to warrant the discomfort of the mother (and woah baby, am I in a lot of discomfort!!).

I've got one friend who had an OB that always scheduled c-sections at 36 weeks for twin pregnancies. After seeing her tiny little 5lb'ers in the NICU, I'm really glad that my doctors take a more hands-off approach to the pregnancy.

Congrats to you, though! I hope these next 17 or so weeks are healthy and comfortable for you!! :goodvibes

I am sorry. I remember that well. Mine were taken at 37 and I was more then ready I know you are. Hope they come for you soon:wizard:

Our twins are also di/di.

Its just interesting to see different doctors follow different practices. We had that same talk at our last appointment about possible induction & when a c-section would be necessary. As well as what to expect during the 2nd half of this pregnancy (more ultrasounds, tests, appointments, etc). Our doctors feel there is more risk to babies kept in after 38 weeks.

Early on in my pregnancy, I had a "friend of a friend" who has twins tell me I would be hard pressed to find a dr that would ALLOW us to even attempt a ******l delivery with twins. Both doctors, in 2 different practices, that we interviewed said they would have no problem with ******l deliveries. As long as the babies' & my health cooperated, anyway. Like I said, it just interesting to see different policies regarding twin delivery.

As long as they are healthy & don't have to spend time in the NICU, is all I care about. That is our main goal.

Good Luck & hopefully your discomfort comes to an end soon with two beautiful healthy babies!

It is interesting how different doctors have different approaches. My first child was born at 33 weeks..weighed 4lb 11oz and spent 2 weeks in NICU learning how to eat..so when I found out i was expecting twins...well you can imagine it was a bit scary since my first was a preemie...I was at an extra high risk. I started having contractions at 25 weeks and was in and out of the hospital with contractions numerous times..however I was never put on bedrest...just told to take it very easy:confused3 The twins were born 1 day shy of 36 weeks at 5lb11oz and 6lb 1 oz no NICU time.
My primary Dr had scheduled me for a c-section based on baby A being footling breech and baby B transverse, but when my water broke and I went into the hospital the Dr on call did an ultrasound because if they were head down he refused to do c-sections. He also tried to convince me to let him try to turn them both...but quickly realized there was no room for them to move:rotfl:

It's totally crazy to see the differences of opinion between doctors on how to approach twin pregnancies. I've heard of lots of doctors that refuse to deliver twins "naturally"... and I've also heard of a lot of doctors that won't attempt a "natural" delivery unless both babies are head down.

There's 5 OB's at my practice so I see them all during pregnancy since any of them could deliver me... they all are comfortable doing a "natural" delivery even if baby B is breech. Just as long as the first baby is head down, they're all experienced in turning the second baby after the first is delivered; if they can't get the second baby turned, they're all comfortable doing a breech delivery too.

Even just the number of doctor's appts varies from doctor to doctor. For me, I only had weekly NSTs and started them at 34 weeks. I have another friend with twins who had NSTs 2 times a week starting at 28 weeks AND weekly ultrasounds. I only have ultrasounds every 4 weeks.

Well, I finally have a date. If nothing happens on its own between now & then, I'm scheduled to be induced Tuesday the 26th. I'll be 39 weeks 2 days. :scared:

Had my 38 week appt today and nothing has really changed -- still walking around 3cm dilated, -2 station and 60-70% effaced. I haven't had any contractions, just some cramping. So I get to go in bright and early at 6:30 a.m. on Tuesday to start the pitocin.

Being induced makes me a little nervous because I know it can end up being VERY long and drawn out and gives higher odds of a c-section... but I'm so close to my EDD anyways, and my body is already more ready for labor than it was when my water broke with DD (water broke, I went to the hospital with no ctx and was only 2-3cm dilated) so I'm hoping all it needs is a little push to get things going.

Congratulations on making it past 38 weeks! I delivered my twin boys at 32 weeks through a c-section, however, I had a scheduled c-section set up for exactly 38 weeks. The doctors at my practice don't feel it is necessary for twins to go past 38 weeks. I can't imagine how uncomfortable you are because I remember how I was have such difficulty sleeping/sitting by 30 weeks. Hang in there and I hope labor/delivery goes well for you!!

Just stopping by real quick to say that my girls were born at 39 weeks 2 days on 6/26. Was induced in the morning and had them at 4:51 p.m. and 5:04 p.m. Didn't need a c-section!! :cool1:

Eleanor Rose (baby A) was 6lb 8oz & Cecilia Rue (baby B) was 7lb 10oz.

Congrats! I must say, that's some big girls! I know you have to be so much more comfortable. I know lots of twin mamas and I believe you have carried the longest and had the biggest. Congrats on doing so well.
