Twinkle Toe Shoes cause epileptic seizures?

I understand the law..but A doctor can still write something stating that "the lights from the shoes could cause seizure. doesnt have to be the child's doctor

My daughter had to get a note from her ped stating the she is highly allergic to bug bite before her school would let her take any medicine at school..

But was your DD's note distributed to the parents of every child in her class - or the parents of every child in the school? :confused3

I'm so confused as to why people want something in writing; a doctors note; medical data beyond a shadow of a doubt - all over a pair of sneakers..:confused3

sorry.. computer froze before I could finish.

What I meant was that if they are saying that its because a medical issue ( and only banning it from one child) then I would want medical proof..

Because if you have been to schools lately you would see that there are 9 million nutjob parents who think their kids need all sorts of accomodations for every imagined ailment under the sun. One of my kids had a child in school that nobody was allowed to look at! That is insane! There was nothing wrong with this child except they had overindulgent parents who let the child rule the roost. Before anyone starts in the whole "How do you know" nonsense- I knew it for fact. There are tons of kids like this. Whatever the kids says is law to the parents. Did your parents cater to your every whim? I would bet that they didn't. Nowadays you have parents who want their child to never have to suck it up and deal with anything. Sure there are kids who are really ill or need accomodations but when every single kid has a problem you tend to not believe any of them anymore. We are creating a generation of selfish whiners. YMMV.

I am not asking the note to be distributed but I would like the school to have doctor documented proof.. My daughter has bad allergies She gets cellulite from bug bites and certain scents ( mainly flowerly candles, lotions and perfumes) make her nose run and her eyes water, itch and swell so bad that she cannot see. What is stopping me from going to school tomorrow and demand that no student or teacher in her class use smelly soap or perfume at school. She has not even started school yet, but do you think they would do that for me. I highly doubt it. They would want me to wait until school started and see how she does. Say there is only one girl who wears lotion that bothers her. They might make the child wearing the lotion go wash her hands and send a note home to the ENTIRE class explaining that there was a child who is allergic and to please refrain from wearing smelling stuff. They wouldnt make the child who was wearing the lotion go home to shower and pretend it didnt happen until the next child wears some..

I love the DIS.

:lmao:
Yesterday DH and I were waiting in my Air conditioned car waiting on AAA for his truck, and I was reading this thread on my iPhone. DH asked if he could use my phone to 'occupy his mind' with a game, etc. I said 'Oh yeah? Well I'm occupying my mind with a debate over twinkle toes shoes, thankyouverymuch!'

Because they are under the mistaken impression that the school is a democracy, and they have to approve of the rule for it to apply to them? Because little snowflake just can't live without those shoes? Because they know the school can't use a note from the child's actual doctor and can't use their already limited resources to hire another doctor to write a diagnosis of a child they've never even seen, and they think if they refuse to comply the kid in question will just go away? :rotfl: Really, I can think of lots of reasons but none of them are good.

I can totally agree with this. There are all sorts of parents out there and some would absolutely lie to the school to get what they want. Many parents seem to put their little snowflake above other students for the most ridiculous of reasons. So I would hope that the school would have documentation from an actual doctor before they would start changing rules for the sake of one child. I don't know of a school that wouldn't want documentation. But for all anyone on this thread knows, the school does have that documentation. They just can't share it with the other parents. And maybe that's why I feel so differently than many on this thread. I've seen school dealing with demanding parents. I've seen schools changing rules and banning things to accomodate those with a medical need. I've dealt with it, and all the documentation that goes along with it. I've never seen a school claim there was a medical issue when there wasn't. So I have no reason to assume that's what's going on in this case.

The school has every right to ban the shoes for simply being a distraction. That's all they need, if "distraction" is mentioned anywhere in the dress code or school handbook. It doesn't matter if parents think "distraction" is a good enough reason. The parents don't get a vote, any more than they do with Silly Bands or cell phones. So to complicate matters by mentioning a medical issue doens't make sense unless it really is a medical issue.

I'll say this - this thread has been interesting! I haven't ever seen the thought process of the parents who don't think the medical accomodations for other kids are fair to their little Princesses before. I've only seen them come into school and yell about it. I'm shocked that so many people are so cynical about this sort of thing!

There is research that shows that flashing lights can trigger seizures.

I'm sure that a child with epilepsy would also have a note from their doctor regarding any medication that he/she may need to take at school. I would never expect for that note to be shared with other parents.

Epilepsy and migraines are now imagined.

Kind of like the people that say that they will allow their child to do/wear whatever they want even after being asked not to because it could cause harm to another child.

No at least I have said I would send my child into school wearing them until they can document that those shoes cause seizures and or they are banned from the whole school for this or being a distraction. Not just my child on the whim of a nurse whose job is not to make administrative dress code decisions.

If they are off the dress code for everyone then I would comply.

You said that you would like to see it. How is that not distributing the doctor's note?

:confused3

I'm guessing maybe she meant a general letter written up by a doctor outlining the effects those shoes may have on students with epilepsy, seizure disorders, migraines etc, not an actual letter from Jane Doe's doctor stating that the sneakers may be harmful to her personally.
I don't see that as any different from the letters distributed during the H1N1 scare, informing students/parents of the risks of coming to school sick, or not washing your hands, or covering your mouth etc. Or the general letters sent home when a child in the class has lice. No HIPPA laws are violated tehre, just general info that makes it pretty obvious someone has been effected (or infected) and how to prevent it happening again.

We'll just have to agree to disagree because to me, that sounds selfish.

I would never expect a school district to hire a doctor to write such a letter. As has been pointed out here, there are links showing that flashing lights can trigger seizures.

This! :thumbsup2

Hmmm....I didn't know my Epilepsy was in my imagination. That would surprise my neurologist. LOL.

People here have posted their own personal experiences regarding how these flickering lights can (and have) caused people to suffer migraines and/or seizures - but that's not good enough.. Those who are more concerned about the sneakers now want a doctor to provide medical documentation that they can choose to believe or not believe..

So - let me ask you this.. If you were in a situation where someone was smoking around your asthmatic child and for whatever reason you couldn't just remove your child from that situation, what would you do? What if you asked the person to stop and they didn't? What if you told them your child could potentially have a serious asthma attack and they said, "Show me the proof.. Do you have a note from your doctor?"

Does anyone here who has a child that can react to various situations they might encounter that could be harmful to their health walk around with a note in their pockets from their doctor to "prove" it to non-believers?

:confused3

And that all goes back to why ALL shoes with flashing lights aren't being banned. If the school isn't willing to protect all seizure/migraine prone students from those flashing lights based on whatever info is in those links, then its not really too much to ask that parents in one class out of the school be notified that there IS an issue with those lights in that class and because of that they are being banned. Just saying "there may be a link" doesn't quite cut it when you are telling one child out of the student body that they aren't allowed to wear those shoes while allowing others to.

We don't know if it's only the OP's child or if others parents were called as well but have the same attitude of some that are posting here and are allowing their child to continue to wear them.
