We are staying @ AK. I am wondering if the tweens want to got eat by themselves or explore the resort, do parents out there feel comfortable letting them do this alone?

Only you can answer that - started letting DS and niece go around on their own at the resort at age 11, within the same park at age 12, on their own at DisneyQuest while we returned to resort at age 13.
