We’ll be sailing a European cruise in a few weeks and my dd who is 11 wants to wear gym shorts (the dolphins shorts style) on the at-sea days. Is this okay for her? She had dresses for nighttime and neater denim shorts for shore days. Our other cruises were when she was little enough to want to wear Disney princess dresses all day, and I don’t recall the standards of dress aboard. Are the cruises around Europe more formal than the Caribbean ones? I’d appreciate any guidance that parents of other tween can give. I tend to be a formal dresser so I’m not sure what to do!

During the day, Disney cruises are informal, even in Europe. Sure, there may be some kids who are a little more dressed up, but there will almost certainly be other tweens in gym shorts as well.

Let her know that Europe has a dress code standard but not a policy. Policies for businesses might change from place to place. She might feel more comfortable with short sleeved tops and capris or skirts that cover the knees at ports. There are places a scarf can be purchased to cover the knees or shoulders if needed for some of the more religious buildings. Also, Italy can have a little attitude sometimes for people with open toed shoes like flip-flops, especially. It’s just the culture, Not necessarily personally against Americans who wear what is known as comfortable.

Thanks - we do have different outfits picked out for our days with churches, and we will have a wrap just in case. Port days are shirts with sleeves.

She’ll be fine.

Even while on land, except for in churches, no one cared what my tween was wearing last summer in Europe. She wore lots of athletic type clothes and it was fine.

We have done three Europe DCL cruises and teens/tweens dress like teens/tweens on at-sea days (even onshore, but we were in Northern Europe and didn't visit any churches). On our Iceland cruise, I will always remember the teens walking around, on "formal night" in sweatshirts and pajama pants. Your daughter's shorts are fine.

She will be fine. That is how mine dressed on a European cruise a few years ago. Just make sure she has a couple of shawls for churches and such and she will be fine.
