As if I dont have enough stress now my tv is being stupid. It started last weekend where I would turn on the tv and go no picture. I would try to turn it off but the TV won't go off! So tonnight I turn on the tv and put in a movie and the chimpmunks were PURPLE!! I turned off the tv and came back latter turned it on and now it just clicks, sorta a click and tick type of sound. Anyone know whats wrong with it? Is it worth saving? I dont have alot of money to fix it.

Cable. Its a old hotel tv that I got used about 4 years ago. Was a wonderful little tv till last weekend. I HATE having a small 13 in tv now... Though the color rocks!

If it was a hotel TV then it was probably used alot. I would suck it up and replace it. To fix those old TVs is pretty expensive.

Not knowing your area I could not give any helpful suggestions.

And honestly I would not buy anything electronic used. You never know what could be wrong with it or how previous owners treated it.

Wisconsin area, I got my last tv used and its made it 5 long years (and around 5 moves)

I am assuming you have a tube style TV from details about your description. The clicking sound could be caused by the flyback or high voltage transformer. The same happened to me years ago on a console TV. I was able to get a little more life out of it by placing a small fan directly inside (it overheated), but it's death was inevitable. Given its age and style, repair wouldn't be cost effective.

The cheapest 20 inch LCD's go for (roughly) $150-175.

A couple ideas for bargains:

  • WalMart is changing their electronics dept, and most of their displays are on sale.
  • Some folks are upgrading their size or features to new models, so there are perfectly good, smaller LCD's out there. Check the paper, yard sales, Craigslist, etc.
  • Deal with the 13" until you can save the money for a new LCD.

Sounds like it had a power surge or electrical storm hit nearby. The power supply and color meter thingy were affected. When a storm came through here our neighbors, TV, microwave and PC monitor all were affected and died in days.

You could find a used one as people are getting rid of the old TV's due to the digital change over. Check yard sales and Craigs list.

Too bad you don't live here. I have a 17" from the 1980s (it actually has a rotary dial tuner) in the basement you could have. :) It probably wouldn't last another six months, though, but that's still six month. ;)

Seriously, ask around. In some areas, you have to jump through hoops to discard an old television, due to the heavy metals in them, so perhaps a family member or friend has one they'd be more than happy to give to you.

My family is spoiled, they all have huge tvs that no one will share (come on a ten year old with a huge tv). Im hunting around, hopefully someone will be giving a older one away. Im not picky Dont even care if its LCD, I just care that its bigger than 13 in.
