Tux question

Aisling said:
Would wearing the tux with bow tie on formal night and wearing the tux with a regular tie on semi formal night work? Would it look too mix-and-matchy wearing a nice long tie with a tux?

Aisling,

What we did last cruise was to wear the tux with "All the trimmings" (studs, etc) on formal night and on semit formal night I wore the tux with a real colorful disney vest.

Worked great, and only had to pack one item for both nights.

Did NOT look out of place in the least, and gave us another night of great family pictures (in fact, the pic from the semiformal night became our xmas card picture for the next year).

If you watched the last Oscar night, a LARGE number wore their tuxes with a long tie.

So it can't be too much of a faux pas.

However, they looked like silk ties, predominantly.

Woody, Jim, and bicker, thanks for this info. I guess it's rent 3 tuxes from the cruiseline, and carry 3 suits for my guys. Unless they just wear suits for formal?? I keep going back and forth. DH and DSs will go along with what I ask of them, but I keep changing my mind. Our formal night falls on Christmas night, so I thought tuxes would be especially nice, but then that means still having to carry 3 suits on board, since you shouldn't wear a regular necktie with a tux.

How can you dress up a suit to make it more formal for formal night, and then wear the same suit for semi? I'm so trying to get ideas! I'd hate to have to spend a mint on renting tuxes AND having to carry suits onboard for my 3 men!

Our servers were so excited to see DH in a tux they wanted a picture:

He wore a shirt & tie to Palo (no jacket) but there were plenty of men there who had nice dress shirts (Tommy Bahama, etc) with khaki or other dress slacks. On our first cruise he rented; but he bought his own at Mens Warehouse 3 years ago.

Beautiful photo! Your DH looks great. So, a tux for formal night, but then what about semi? Did you bring a suit AND a tux? My problem is that I'm packing for 3 guys: DH, DS13, and DS20.

When was this that guys wore Tommy Bahama shirts to Palo? The reason I'm asking is because as of May, the personal navigator's specifically say NO Tommy Bahama-type shirts. I think they really are trying to get Palo back to a more formal atmosphere.

I would definitely wear a tux on a formal night that falls on Christmas. Your DH and DSs can wear the tuxes on the semi-formal night (with all the trimmings) as well, and not feel out of place. You can leave the suits at home. Just don't try to "dress down" the tuxedos with neckties.

Shall I go on?

grim pirate:

On my first cruise, I bought a tux on ebay for about the cost of a rental, and I also brought a suit.

My next cruise, I'm leaving the suit at home and just taking the tux. I'm wearing it with a vest and tie on formal, and with just a tie for semi-formal.

I can only hope that woody73 forgives me for the faux pas! :rotfl:

That was probably before the dress code changed at Palo.

We were on the Magic in 9/04, 1/05, 5/05 (westbound repo), and will be on the 8/05 (eastbound repo) when Palo's new dress policy was/is in effect.

During these cruises, I heard that Palo changed its dress code because previously men would arrive with a sport coat and Tommy Bahama shirt (technically meeting the prior dress code), but would take their coats off during dinner. As a result, many men ended up wearing casual wear (Tommy Bahama) during dinner, which DCL did not like. DCL wanted to maintain the upscale ambiance at Palo, and changed the dress code to require dress shirts (and <B>recommending</B> ties and sportcoats).

Personally, I would take either a tuxedo <B>or</B> a dark suit (not both) on a 7-day cruise, and wear it on both formal and semi-formal night. I have done both. My DW <I>loves</I> the photos with the tuxedo!

Now the tough question: What to take on the 14-day eastbound repositioning cruise? (Typically, I would take a tuxedo with different shirts [wing and point collars] and bow tie/cuberbun/vest combinations -- I would not wear the same outfit.)

Aisling - My DH wore a shirt & tie on semiformal night; and a different shirt & tie to Palo - we didn't pack a jacket. This was just last month, on the June 25 cruise. I packed him 3 dress shirts (the type you wear with a tie); 2 nicer Tommy Bahama shirts and 3 - 4 golf-style shirts so he would have some choices for dinner.

I've got the Navigator from July 1, 2005 right in front of me. At the top of the first page just under the dates it states: Suggested Palo Attire: Dress Shirt or Jacket Required, No Shorts Please. The men I saw in business casual attire at Palo did not look out of place. "Dress Shirt" has a very broad definition, when your DH doesn't want to wear a tie.

Has anyone heard of someone being turned away at Palo? As much as I've read about this topic on these boards I've never seen this mentioned.

Well, I wouldn't use the Academy Awards broadcast as a standard. The point of broadcasting the Oscars is to give visibility-hungry celebrity more visibility, and often they go to extreme lengths (Read: deliberately violate standards) in order to stand out.

It is perfectly acceptable to wear a 4-in-hand tie with a tuxedo. Formal Night on DCL is hardly an 'ultra-formal night'. Take a look at any one of the thousands of tuxedo sales/rental shops in this Country (or Europe for that matter).

"4-in-hand tie: These ties are similar to business ties, except for the fact that they are made of a more formal fabric. The 4-in-hand usually matches the vest. The 4-in-hand tie has made a big comeback in the recent years, rivalling the bowtie as the most popular neckwear option."

But Jim, on semi, did you wear a tie??

:confused3 I have so much to learn!

Hi Grim  , you rascal! You crack me up with all the pictures, but they sure gave me some great ideas!

jlima, I have indeed read on these boards that people have been turned away from Palo. Must have been embarrassing.
